The most practical low-cost setup is a spare PC running OBS, with your showroom video set to loop, a stable internet connection, and YouTube’s stream-health page monitored. The loop keeps the content playing; it does not guarantee that the PC, network, encoder, or YouTube connection will stay online. For a stream that should continue without a home computer running, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative: upload a video, add your YouTube stream key, and go live.
What you need for a continuous showroom stream
A YouTube Live encoder sends video to YouTube using a server URL and a private stream key. OBS can play a prerecorded video or playlist as its source, but an unattended setup also depends on the PC staying powered, the encoder keeping up, and the network sustaining the stream.
- A spare PC capable of encoding your chosen resolution and frame rate.
- OBS Studio and the showroom video or playlist you have permission to stream.
- A YouTube Live Control Room encoder stream, its server URL, and its private stream key.
- A stable upload connection with enough bandwidth for the stream.
- A plan to check stream health and recover from power, network, or software interruptions.
Set up the spare PC with OBS and YouTube
1. Create the YouTube encoder stream
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or schedule an encoder stream.
- Set the stream’s title, privacy, and other metadata, then copy the server URL and stream key.
- Enter those values in OBS’s streaming settings. Treat the key like a password: do not publish or share it. Reset it in YouTube if you think it has been exposed. YouTube explains how a stream key lets an encoder send a feed in its stream setup guidance.
2. Make a looping OBS scene
- In OBS, create a scene for the showroom feed.
- Add the video as a Media Source, choose the file, and enable Loop.
- For a playlist, add a VLC Video Source and enable Loop Playlist. This source requires VLC; 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.
- Play the scene locally before going live. Check that the picture fits the canvas and that the audio is intentional—muted if it should be silent, or clean and at a suitable level if it should be heard.
OBS’s instructions for Media Sources and VLC Video Source describe the source options. A loop only repeats the media; it does not restart a failed stream connection.
3. Choose settings your PC and connection can sustain
YouTube supports several encoder formats, including H.264, H.265, and AV1, and recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval; its guidance says not to exceed four seconds. Use YouTube’s current encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions as a starting point, not a promise that a particular setting will work on your machine.

Set the output resolution, frame rate, encoder, and bitrate in OBS to match what the PC can encode and your upload can sustain. A simple scene and a lower tested output can be more dependable than pushing a spare PC to its limits. OBS notes that basic operating-system or GPU compatibility does not guarantee adequate performance for every encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene.
4. Leave bandwidth headroom
YouTube recommends upload capacity with 20% headroom beyond the total stream bitrate. If you use primary and backup streams, account for both bitrates. YouTube warns that connection disruptions can break a stream. Ethernet is a useful option when available, but it is not a requirement and cannot fix an unstable internet service. See YouTube’s streaming tips for its network guidance.

5. Test the complete setup before relying on it
Use the same video, scene, audio, encoder settings, and network you intend to use for the showroom. YouTube recommends configuring an encoder at least two hours before an event and starting it at least 15 minutes beforehand. Check the Live Control Room preview, the public or private watch page as appropriate, audio and video playback, and whether a local archive is being created. OBS also recommends testing settings before a first stream.
Keep it running—and understand what can still interrupt it
Use reconnect, but do not treat it as a guarantee
OBS has an automatic reconnect setting that can recover from some disconnections. Enable it in OBS’s stream settings, then test a deliberate brief network interruption to see how your configuration behaves. OBS’s connection troubleshooting guide explains that dropped frames and intermittent disconnections can indicate network instability or a bitrate the connection cannot sustain.

Keep the YouTube Live Control Room stream-health view available when practical and check the physical system periodically. Reconnect settings and stream-health monitoring can help identify or recover from some faults, but neither guarantees uninterrupted service.
Check power and unattended-computer behavior on your own device
The PC must remain powered and awake for OBS to keep encoding. Sleep behavior, update-related restarts, and firmware power-off behavior depend on the operating system and machine. Check the current instructions for your specific OS and PC rather than applying a generic setting. Also make sure the PC has adequate ventilation and is placed where it can run safely unattended.

Plan around YouTube’s archive limit
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. If preserving an archive matters, do not assume a longer continuous stream will be saved. Plan a session length and a separate archive workflow that fit your needs; the cited YouTube guidance does not prescribe a schedule for showroom streams. Details are in YouTube’s stream archiving guidance.

| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Video ends instead of repeating | The media source’s loop option is off, or the playlist source is not configured to loop. | Enable Loop for a Media Source or Loop Playlist for a VLC Video Source; replay the scene locally. |
| YouTube does not receive the feed | Wrong or stale stream key/server URL, or encoder not started. | Compare OBS’s stream settings with the current YouTube Live Control Room details. If the key may have been exposed, reset it. |
| Dropped frames or repeated disconnects | Unstable network or bitrate beyond what the connection can sustain. | Check YouTube stream health, test upload stability, lower the bitrate if needed, and leave the recommended 20% bandwidth headroom. |
| Choppy output despite a stable connection | The PC may not be keeping up with the selected encoder, resolution, frame rate, or scene. | Review OBS performance and simplify the scene or reduce output settings, then test again before relying on the stream. |
| The stream stops while unattended | PC sleep, power loss, updates, or a prolonged network outage. | Check the machine’s OS and manufacturer guidance for power and restart behavior; verify reconnect behavior and arrange periodic physical checks. |
| No archive appears after a very long stream | The session exceeded YouTube’s under-12-hour automatic archiving condition. | Use a deliberate session length and separate recording/archive plan when the replay matters. |
When a spare PC is—and is not—the right choice
A spare PC is a reasonable do-it-yourself option when you can leave it powered, test it under the real workload, and respond to interruptions. OBS provides control over scenes and sources, and a local loop can play a single video or playlist. The trade-off is that the stream depends on your computer, power, network, and ongoing monitoring. The available guidance does not establish comparative reliability or performance figures for spare PCs versus dedicated hardware encoders, or for wired versus wireless setups.
