To switch scenes in an active OBS broadcast, open Settings → Hotkeys, assign a distinct shortcut to each scene’s Switch to scene action, apply the settings, and test the shortcuts before going live. If you use Studio Mode, verify whether your shortcut changes the live Program or only prepares the Preview.
Set up scene-switching hotkeys in OBS
- Prepare the scenes you need. Create and name each scene for a real broadcast moment, such as a welcome screen, documentary footage, a break, or an end screen. In OBS, a scene is a layout made from sources such as video, images, audio, and capture inputs. See the OBS Studio Overview Guide and Sources Guide.
- Open the hotkey assignments. In OBS, go to Settings → Hotkeys. Find the Switch to scene action associated with each scene you want to reach quickly.
- Assign distinct combinations. Choose a memorable shortcut for each priority scene. Avoid assigning the same combination to multiple actions: OBS warns that shared combinations can behave as toggles. Review the Hotkeys list and check for conflicts with game controls or other applications. The current interface labels are documented in the OBS Studio interface strings.
- Apply and rehearse. Apply your settings, then press each shortcut in the same operating context you expect to use during the broadcast. Confirm that the intended scene appears, that its visible sources and audio are correct, and that you can return to your normal scene.
- Verify what viewers see. If OBS is in Studio Mode, check the Preview and Program panels separately before relying on the shortcut. Confirm the intended scene has actually reached the live output.
Studio Mode: distinguish Preview from the live scene
Studio Mode shows the current Live Scene on the right and the scene being prepared on the left. A transition sends the prepared scene to the live output. That distinction matters when rehearsing scene hotkeys: seeing the target in Preview does not by itself confirm that it is live. OBS explains Studio Mode and transitions in its overview guide. Test the exact sequence you plan to use, including any transition action, and verify the Program output.
Scene hotkeys are not scene-collection changes
A scene hotkey selects an individual scene in the active setup. A scene collection is a saved set of scenes and sources for a production setup; it does not store output settings. Collections can help organize different kinds of broadcasts or reduce the number of scenes in a list. For a scene change during a continuous broadcast, use a hotkey for the target scene in the current collection rather than treating a collection change as an ordinary on-air switch. OBS describes collections in its Scene Collections guide. Elgato also recommends selecting a collection before going live or recording to prevent interruptions in its OBS Studio integration guide.
Keyboard shortcuts or a Stream Deck?
OBS’s built-in hotkeys handle scene switching without extra hardware. If you prefer labeled physical buttons, Elgato’s OBS integration can map specific scene actions to Stream Deck keys. Its plugin also supports switching scenes or previewing them in Studio Mode before sending them live. The plugin is described as free; the Stream Deck hardware is a separate purchase. Choose based on how many actions you need, whether you can reach your assigned keys comfortably, whether visible labels matter, and whether you want a control to send a scene live immediately or prepare it for Preview first. These are workflow considerations, not measured speed or reliability comparisons.
