OBS Hardware Encoding vs. Software Encoding for a 24/7 YouTube Playlist

Hardware encoding is a practical first test for an always-on OBS playlist, but quality and stability depend on your hardware, settings, and connection. Here’s how to compare it with x264 and plan for YouTube’s archive limit.

For most 24/7 YouTube playlists, start with an OBS-compatible hardware encoder your computer already has: it moves encoding work off the CPU. But hardware is not automatically better, and neither encoder type guarantees an uninterrupted stream. Test hardware encoding and x264 on your actual playlist, output settings, and connection before relying on either.

What hardware encoding and x264 do

OBS can encode with a dedicated component in compatible hardware, such as NVIDIA NVENC, AMD AMF, Intel QSV, or Apple VideoToolbox, depending on the operating system and hardware. The alternative, x264, encodes in software using the CPU. OBS generally recommends hardware encoders for performance because they reduce the CPU’s encoding workload (OBS Project: Hardware Encoding).

For a playlist stream, encoding is only one part of the workload. OBS also has to render the scene, while the computer and network must remain functional. A compatible encoder does not prove that the whole system can sustain your chosen resolution, frame rate, scene, and bitrate. OBS notes that requirements vary with those settings and that basic compatibility does not guarantee successful streaming (OBS Project: System Requirements).

Hardware encoding vs. x264: which should you use?

Factor Hardware encoder x264 software encoder
Where encoding happens A dedicated encoding component in compatible hardware; generally less encoding work for the CPU. On the CPU; demanding settings can use substantial processor capacity.
Image quality at a constrained bitrate Depends on encoder generation. OBS warns that older hardware encoders can produce lower quality at the same bitrate than x264’s default veryfast preset. Can provide better quality per bitrate in some cases, according to OBS’s x264 guidance, but requires enough CPU capacity for real-time encoding.
Compatibility Depends on hardware family, generation, operating system, and OBS support. The x264 option is included in OBS, but performance still depends on the CPU and chosen settings.
24/7 suitability Lower CPU encoding load can leave capacity for other work; it does not establish uptime by itself. Can work if the CPU sustains the selected settings without overload. Validate it rather than judging by processor model alone.

If the machine already has a supported hardware encoder, test that first; compare it with x264 if quality at your bitrate is unsatisfactory or if you want to confirm stability. Do not buy a GPU solely because a stream is continuous. Consider an upgrade only after testing shows that your existing options cannot meet the target without overload.

Set OBS for YouTube ingest

Choose a codec, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate that YouTube accepts and OBS exposes for your system. YouTube’s current live encoder guidance supports H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 over RTMP or RTMPS, but available choices vary by encoder and setup. Its recommended bitrate depends on codec, resolution, and frame rate; for example, for 1080p at 30 fps, YouTube lists 14 Mbps for H.264 and 10 Mbps for AV1 or H.265. These are platform recommendations, not proof that your connection can sustain the rate (YouTube Help: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions).

  1. Choose the encoder in OBS. In Settings > Output, use the streaming encoder selector to choose a supported hardware encoder or x264. The exact options depend on your operating system and hardware. Run a test with the actual playlist scene and intended output settings.
  2. Set the output mode and rate control. Use CBR, as YouTube recommends for live ingest. Pick a bitrate from YouTube’s table for your selected codec, resolution, and frame rate, then confirm your upload connection can sustain it with headroom.
  3. Set keyframes. Use a 2-second keyframe interval; YouTube’s maximum is 4 seconds. The setting is usually in the encoder’s streaming output options in OBS.
  4. Use RTMPS where available. YouTube recommends encrypted RTMPS transport. In OBS, select the YouTube RTMPS server option if it is offered, and use the stream key from YouTube Live Control Room.
  5. Check stream health before relying on the setup. Test before the scheduled broadcast and review YouTube’s stream-health messages. YouTube says to test before starting a live stream (live encoder settings).

YouTube changes its recommended bitrate by codec and output mode, so use its current table rather than treating one bitrate as universal. A higher recommendation is not useful if the connection cannot deliver it consistently.

Plan bandwidth, monitoring, and recovery

YouTube recommends keeping 20% upload-bandwidth headroom above the total stream bitrate. Leave additional capacity for other household or office traffic where possible; a connection that barely matches the configured bitrate has little room for fluctuation. YouTube also emphasizes testing, network reliability, and monitoring (YouTube Help: Streaming tips).

  • Test the complete setup, including the playlist, scene, encoder, and target output settings, before leaving it unattended.
  • Watch OBS for encoding or rendering overload and YouTube Live Control Room for stream-health problems.
  • Keep the computer, OBS, and network equipment powered and stable for the full broadcast. An encoder does not protect against a power cut, internet outage, or application failure.
  • If you need a local archive, check that the recording file continues to grow during the broadcast.

Will YouTube save a 24-hour live stream?

Do not rely on YouTube to create a complete automatic archive of one uninterrupted 24-hour broadcast. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, but a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. It recommends making a local archive backup (YouTube Help: Archive live streams).

If preserving the full program matters, plan a separate recording or test a schedule split that keeps each broadcast below the 12-hour threshold. Check that the local recording is being written and that you have enough storage for the intended retention period; the required capacity depends on bitrate, codec, recording format, and duration.

Troubleshooting a long-running OBS playlist stream

  • YouTube reports dropped frames or an unstable connection: Check the available upload bandwidth and other network use. Keep the recommended 20% headroom, test again, and review YouTube’s stream-health messages.
  • OBS reports encoding overload: Test the hardware encoder if supported, or reduce the output resolution, frame rate, or encoder demands. If testing x264, confirm the CPU can sustain the preset with the real scene; compatibility alone is not enough.
  • Image quality is poor at the selected bitrate: Confirm the codec-specific bitrate recommendation and compare hardware and x264 using the same output target. Older hardware generations may deliver lower quality than x264 veryfast at the same bitrate.
  • The stream ends or OBS stops: Encoder choice alone cannot establish the cause or guarantee recovery. Check the computer, power, OBS, and network, then test the whole setup under the conditions in which it will run.
  • The YouTube archive is missing or incomplete: A broadcast longer than 12 hours may not be captured. Use a verified local recording or a tested schedule split if the complete archive is needed.
