For a low-CPU YouTube stream, first try a compatible hardware encoder—NVIDIA NVENC, AMD AMF, or Intel Quick Sync—if your computer offers one. It shifts encoding work from the CPU to dedicated hardware. If you need x264, choose the fastest preset that still gives acceptable picture quality and remains stable; faster presets such as veryfast or ultrafast use less CPU but can compress less efficiently. For YouTube RTMP/RTMPS, use CBR and a 2-second keyframe interval, and set bitrate for your chosen codec, resolution, and frame rate.
No preset guarantees a stable 24/7 stream on every computer. Validate the complete setup with representative video motion and audio before relying on it.
Choose the encoder before choosing an x264 preset
OBS offers software encoding with x264 and hardware encoding options such as NVIDIA NVENC, AMD AMF, and Intel Quick Sync, depending on the installed hardware and software support. OBS recommends considering hardware encoding when available because it moves encoding work from the CPU to a dedicated component. If CPU load is the problem, test the encoder supported by your system before lowering x264 quality.
- NVIDIA GPU: NVENC is generally the relevant hardware path.
- AMD GPU: AMF is generally the relevant hardware path.
- Intel integrated graphics: Quick Sync may be available.
- x264: Use it when hardware encoding is unavailable, incompatible, or unsuitable for your setup.
OBS notes that users with NVIDIA or AMD GPUs generally use NVENC or AMF rather than Quick Sync. Availability depends on the specific hardware, operating system, drivers, and OBS build; the encoder names alone do not establish that a particular machine can use them. See the OBS hardware encoding guidance.

Which x264 preset uses less CPU?
x264 presets range from ultrafast through placebo. The faster the preset, the less processing time it uses, but the less efficiently it compresses video at a given bitrate. A faster preset may therefore produce a less detailed image than a slower preset at the same bitrate. The right choice is the fastest preset that delivers acceptable quality for your content while remaining stable at the resolution and frame rate you intend to stream.
| Preset choice | CPU demand | Picture-quality trade-off | When to try it |
|---|---|---|---|
veryfast |
Lower than slower x264 presets | Less compression efficiency than slower presets at the same bitrate | A practical starting point when x264 is needed and the current preset overloads the CPU. OBS uses it as an example in its recording guide, not as a universal live-stream prescription. |
ultrafast |
Lower still | Greater compression-efficiency trade-off; the image may look worse at the same bitrate | Try it if CPU remains the bottleneck after selecting a faster preset, then assess whether the image remains acceptable. |
| Slower presets | Higher | Can improve compression efficiency at the same bitrate | Use only if your system has enough CPU headroom and the resulting quality improvement matters. |
OBS’s x264 explanation describes the trade as reducing CPU use while compensating with bandwidth to reach roughly similar quality; that is not a guarantee that every faster-preset and bitrate combination will look identical. The x264 article dates to 2017, so treat the relationship as qualitative and check the current options in your installed OBS build. See OBS Project: Streaming with x264 and its Advanced Recording Settings Guide (dated 2023-11-30).

Set YouTube’s output requirements
The encoder preset manages encoding workload; it does not replace YouTube’s ingest settings. For an RTMP/RTMPS YouTube stream, configure the following and confirm the current requirements in YouTube’s live encoder settings guidance.
- Rate control: CBR (constant bitrate).
- Keyframe interval: 2 seconds recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds.
- Video codec: YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS. Confirm that your selected encoder and ingest path support the codec you choose.
- Bitrate: Follow the YouTube recommendation for the selected codec, resolution, and frame rate, rather than copying a number from a different target.
For reference, YouTube’s current table, accessed in 2026, lists H.264 at 6 Mbps for 1080p30 and 17 Mbps for 1080p60. These figures apply to those H.264 targets, not to every codec, resolution, or frame rate; consult YouTube’s table for the exact combination you plan to send.

Configure OBS and validate the workload
- Open the streaming output settings. In OBS, go to Settings → Output and select the streaming output mode and encoder available on your system. OBS labels and available encoders can vary by build and hardware.
- Choose a hardware encoder if CPU is constrained. Select the supported NVENC, AMF, or Quick Sync option and test it. Otherwise select x264 and begin with
veryfast; if CPU is still overloaded, tryultrafastand check whether the picture quality remains acceptable. - Set rate control and keyframes. Use CBR and a 2-second keyframe interval for YouTube RTMP/RTMPS. Do not exceed 4 seconds.
- Choose resolution and frame rate for the content. Then use YouTube’s current bitrate table for that codec and target. A 1080p30 stream and a 1080p60 stream have different H.264 recommendations, and other codecs differ too.
- Test a representative segment. Include the expected audio and video movement, not just a static desktop or silent scene. Watch OBS performance and YouTube’s stream-health messages while it runs.
- Check sustained operation before depending on it. A short successful test does not establish that a configuration will hold indefinitely. Observe the actual machine and connection under the intended workload before treating it as ready for 24/7 use.
YouTube specifically recommends testing with audio and movement similar to the planned stream, and monitoring stream health and messages. Its guidance does not prescribe one universal OBS configuration or guarantee a fixed duration of stability. See YouTube Help.
Troubleshoot high CPU or poor stream health
| Symptom | Likely area to check | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| CPU remains high or OBS reports encoding overload | x264 preset or CPU capacity | Try a faster x264 preset such as veryfast or ultrafast, or test a compatible hardware encoder. Recheck image quality after changing presets. |
| Image quality is poor at the chosen bitrate | Preset efficiency, target bitrate, codec, resolution, or frame rate | Verify the bitrate against YouTube’s table for the exact codec and output target. A faster x264 preset trades compression efficiency for lower CPU use. |
| YouTube reports a stream configuration problem | Rate control, keyframe interval, codec, or bitrate | Confirm CBR, a 2-second recommended keyframe interval (no more than 4 seconds), supported codec, and the corresponding YouTube bitrate recommendation. |
| A test passes, but long-running behavior is uncertain | Sustained system load, cooling, network capacity, or changing scene complexity | Test representative content for a meaningful period and monitor OBS and YouTube health indicators. The official guidance does not establish a universal stability guarantee. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If keeping a computer and home connection running is the part you want to avoid, StreamNeo keeps an uploaded-video YouTube stream running from the cloud. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos; it does not broadcast a live camera.
