If OBS’s Network Dropped Frames counter climbs while you stream a YouTube loop, first lower the video bitrate in Settings → Output until it fits your stable upload capacity. Then, on Windows, test Settings → Advanced → Network → Enable network optimizations and Enable TCP pacing. Leave Bind to IP on Default. Try IP Family → IPv4 Only only as a diagnostic; if it makes no difference, restore IPv4 and IPv6.
These steps target network-dropped frames—not rendering lag or encoding lag. OBS says network drops mean the connection to the streaming server is unstable or cannot sustain the configured bitrate. A YouTube loop does not change that basic diagnosis: confirm which OBS counter is rising before changing settings.
Confirm that the problem is network-dropped frames
OBS tracks distinct causes of stream problems. This guide is for the Network Dropped Frames counter. It is not a reason, by itself, to change encoder settings for encoding lag or rendering settings for rendering lag. Viewer-side buffering is different again: viewers may buffer because their connection cannot keep up, even when OBS is not reporting network drops.
OBS describes dropped frames as a way to avoid buffering and keep the stream playing. The OBS Project Help Portal puts it this way: “OBS opts to drop the frames to avoid buffering and keep your stream playing.” The remote streaming server belongs to the streaming service, not OBS.

Fix network drops in the order most likely to help
1. Check stable upload capacity and leave headroom
Run a speed test that reports upload speed; download speed does not tell you whether the outgoing stream can be sustained. Consider other people and devices sharing the connection, and test under conditions similar to the actual loop. OBS suggests using about 75% of total upload speed as a useful starting point. YouTube recommends leaving 20% bandwidth headroom. Neither figure guarantees stability: available upload capacity can vary.
Compare your OBS video bitrate with YouTube’s recommendation for your selected codec, resolution, and frame rate. A YouTube encoder recommendation is a video-bitrate target, not a claim that your connection can sustain that rate; you still need upload capacity and headroom.

2. Lower the video bitrate in OBS
- In OBS, open Settings → Output.
- Lower the video bitrate, then test the stream using representative audio and movement.
- Watch OBS’s network-dropped-frames counter and YouTube’s stream health. If the drops stop, the previous bitrate may have exceeded reliable capacity on the tested connection.
Lower bitrate can stabilize an overloaded upload path, but it reduces video quality. Change this before trying unrelated encoder options: network-dropped frames point to the connection between your computer and YouTube’s ingest server, not necessarily a slow video encoder.
3. Test another YouTube ingest server
In OBS, open Settings → Stream and select another server if one is available. Retest under similar conditions. If performance changes, the route to the original ingest server may be contributing; changing servers does not repair a generally unstable connection.

4. Test OBS network options
Open Settings → Advanced → Network. The available options can vary by operating system; OBS’s guide identifies the following network-optimization and TCP-pacing settings for Windows.
- Enable network optimizations: enable it as a test.
- Enable TCP pacing: enable it as a test.
- Bind to IP: keep Default.
- IP Family: if needed, test IPv4 Only. If it does not help, return to IPv4 and IPv6.
These are reversible diagnostics, not universal fixes. Test one change at a time where possible so you can tell whether it helped.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
5. Treat dynamic bitrate as a fallback
Dynamically change bitrate to manage congestion (Beta) can reduce drops by lowering bitrate when the connection cannot keep up. It is a mitigation, not a fix for the underlying network problem, and the lower bitrate means lower quality. If you use it, continue investigating the connection rather than assuming the cause is resolved.
6. Isolate local network and software problems
- If you use Wi-Fi, test a wired connection. OBS recommends wired networking because Wi-Fi can be unstable for streaming.
- Check whether a VPN, security software, or network-prioritization utility is interfering; temporarily test without the suspected software where safe.
- Check network drivers and, where appropriate, restart the modem and router.
- Inspect cables and other network devices if your troubleshooting points to faulty hardware. A cable change cannot fix ISP congestion or routing outside your home.
- If drops persist after these checks, contact your ISP. Congestion or routing beyond your home network may be involved.
Use YouTube’s bitrate guidance for the loop’s format
The following are YouTube’s recommended H.264 video bitrates; YouTube also lists recommendations for AV1 and H.265. These are encoder recommendations, not required upload-speed measurements. Choose the row that matches the loop’s resolution and frame rate, then make sure the connection can carry the stream with headroom.

YouTube’s page includes a fuller codec, resolution, and frame-rate matrix, including minimum bitrate settings; consult it for formats not shown here. YouTube recommends RTMPS for RTMP-based streaming and a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds.
Why a YouTube loop can still drop frames
A loop may use prerecorded footage, but OBS still has to send the configured stream to YouTube in real time. If the upload path cannot consistently carry that bitrate—or the route to the ingest server is unstable—network-dropped frames can rise. The loop’s image quality and frame rate affect the bitrate you choose, while the actual connection and shared network determine whether that bitrate is sustainable.
For streaming loops, test with the same video format and realistic audio and motion as the live broadcast. YouTube advises monitoring stream health during a representative test; a short test on an otherwise idle connection may not reflect a busy period.
Quick troubleshooting by symptom
| What you observe | What to check next |
|---|---|
| Network-dropped-frames counter rises | Measure upload, account for shared use, lower bitrate, then test ingest server and network options. |
| Only viewers report buffering | Distinguish viewer-side buffering from OBS network drops. A bitrate or quality reduction may help viewers on slower connections. |
| Changing IPv4 Only has no effect | Restore IPv4 and IPv6, as OBS recommends. |
| Drops continue at a lower bitrate | Test wired networking, investigate VPN or security software and drivers, then contact the ISP if the route or congestion may be external. |
| Dynamic bitrate reduces drops but picture quality falls | That is the expected trade-off; continue diagnosing the connection instead of treating the beta setting as a root-cause fix. |
