FFmpeg YouTube Live Keeps Disconnecting on Indian Broadband: How to Diagnose and Fix It

A practical guide to finding why an FFmpeg YouTube Live loop disconnects: test stable upload, verify bitrate and RTMPS settings, separate input from output failures, and assess recovery options.

There is no single “Indian broadband” fix for an FFmpeg stream that keeps disconnecting. The cause could be unstable upload, Wi-Fi, the encoder, the media input, FFmpeg’s output connection, or YouTube’s ingest. Capture the failure, test the connection under streaming conditions, then adjust settings or recovery behavior based on the evidence.

Start by finding where the failure occurs

A disconnect is a symptom, not a diagnosis. The country alone does not identify the ISP, connection type, route to YouTube, FFmpeg build, command, or error. Before changing settings, preserve enough evidence to tell whether the input stopped, FFmpeg failed, the local connection dropped, or YouTube reported an ingest problem.

Record the failure before restarting

  • Save the FFmpeg log covering the minutes before and after the break. Keep timestamps and redact the stream key before sharing the log.
  • Save the exact command, also with the key redacted, and note the FFmpeg version and build configuration.
  • Identify the input type (file, playlist, or another source) and output protocol (RTMP or RTMPS).
  • Record the YouTube Live Control Room stream-health status and any message shown at the same time.
  • Note whether the computer, router, or other local devices lost connectivity, and whether playback from the input continued.

This separates an input or encoder failure from a network or YouTube-side issue. A generic message such as “connection reset” is useful, but it needs the surrounding log and stream-health evidence to be interpreted.

Check whether upload capacity is stable

A broadband plan’s advertised speed and a speed test’s peak result do not establish that the connection can sustain a live upload for hours. YouTube advises choosing a quality that is reliable for the actual connection, testing upload bitrate, and running a representative test before going live. Its guidance says, “Make sure you choose a quality that will result in a reliable stream based on your internet connection.” (YouTube Help: encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.)

Test under the same conditions

  1. Use the same computer, router, connection, and location you plan to use for the stream.
  2. Run a long enough test to reveal fluctuations, not just a brief speed-test peak. Check whether upload remains steady while the encoder is producing representative audio and motion.
  3. Run a private or unlisted test stream and watch YouTube Live Control Room’s stream-health messages while FFmpeg runs.
  4. If the computer is on Wi-Fi, compare with a wired Ethernet test if available. This is a diagnostic comparison, not a guarantee: Ethernet cannot fix an ISP route, congestion beyond the router, a YouTube ingest issue, or an encoder fault.

If upload varies or the stream reports bitrate-related health problems, reduce the stream’s target load and repeat the test before diagnosing the ISP as the cause.

Choose a resolution and bitrate the line can sustain

YouTube’s H.264 ingest recommendations include the following examples. They are platform guidance, not measurements of Indian broadband performance and not a guarantee that a particular connection can sustain the rate continuously.

Output H.264 minimum bitrate H.264 recommended bitrate
720p at 30 fps 3 Mbps 8 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps 5 Mbps 14 Mbps

Use the matching row for the resolution and frame rate you intend to send, and consult YouTube’s settings table for other combinations or codecs. A lower resolution, frame rate, or bitrate can reduce the sustained upload demand. Do not assume that choosing a recommended ingest bitrate makes a fluctuating connection reliable; test the chosen output with the actual connection and content.

Verify encoder and YouTube output settings

YouTube’s current encoder guidance supports RTMP/RTMPS and lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1. It recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a 2-second keyframe interval, and a keyframe interval no longer than 4 seconds; it also lists frame rates up to 60 fps. Use settings that match the selected codec and resolution in YouTube’s guidance rather than copying a setting from a different stream.

  • Test content: Include the representative audio and motion expected during the real broadcast, then monitor stream health in Live Control Room.

Do not confuse HTTP input retries with RTMP output recovery

FFmpeg options apply to the next input or output and reset after it, so their position in the command matters. The HTTP protocol documentation describes reconnect controls for HTTP contexts, such as HTTP reads or connections. Those controls are not universal switches for reconnecting an RTMP or RTMPS publishing output. Adding an HTTP reconnect option to a command does not, by itself, repair a dropped YouTube publish connection.

Check the protocol and the relevant FFmpeg documentation for the particular input or output that failed. If the log shows the media input failed, address that input. If it shows the publishing connection failed, investigate the output path and consider a recovery mechanism intended for network output.

Consider FFmpeg’s FIFO muxer only after checking your build

FFmpeg’s FIFO muxer has options for attempting recovery and waiting before retrying a network output. This is a separate, configured approach—not a guarantee that a YouTube event remains seamless or resumes at the exact frame after every interruption. Behavior depends on the FFmpeg version, configuration, and failure.

  1. Check whether your installed build supports the muxer and its options with ffmpeg -h muxer=fifo, where supported.
  2. Read the installed version’s documentation and verify the exact syntax for recovery and retry waiting. Option names and availability may vary by build.
  3. Test a controlled interruption outside an important broadcast. Observe whether FFmpeg reconnects, how much data is buffered or dropped, and whether YouTube’s event remains usable.
  4. Keep the log and compare its timestamps with YouTube’s stream-health messages; do not treat a successful local retry as proof of uninterrupted viewer playback.

FIFO recovery can help with some transient network faults, but buffering, dropped data, and a YouTube session interruption remain possible. It is not a substitute for stable upload or a correctly configured encoder.

Troubleshoot by symptom

What you observe What to check next Practical response
Upload or stream health fluctuates Compare sustained upload with the selected bitrate; test under the same conditions and, if possible, compare Wi-Fi with wired Ethernet. Lower the target resolution, frame rate, or bitrate, then run another representative test. Escalate with timestamps and diagnostics if the problem persists on a stable wired test.
FFmpeg reports an input read or connection error Determine whether the source is a local file, playlist, or network input and whether it stopped independently of YouTube. Address the failing input. HTTP reconnect options are relevant only to HTTP contexts, not as general RTMP publishing recovery.
FFmpeg reports an output connection failure Check the RTMP/RTMPS destination, current stream key, output settings, and contemporaneous YouTube health message. Correct configuration errors, test RTMPS, and consider version-validated FIFO recovery if appropriate. Do not assume a retry means the live event continued without interruption.
Stream health looks normal but the stream still ends Review the full FFmpeg log and distinguish process exit, input completion, host sleep or shutdown, and a YouTube event ending. Fix the component that stopped. A network reconnection option cannot prevent a local process or machine from stopping.

When to contact the ISP or YouTube

If measured upload is stable, encoder settings comply with YouTube’s guidance, and the failure still recurs, compare logs and stream-health evidence across wired and wireless tests or, if available, another connection. Contact the ISP when the evidence points to the local service or route; contact YouTube when Live Control Room indicates an ingest-side issue. Include timestamps, the redacted FFmpeg command and logs, FFmpeg version, connection type, and the health message. The country of the connection alone is not evidence of a particular ISP outage or RTMP failure.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the goal is to keep pre-recorded video looping on a YouTube channel, StreamNeo avoids relying on a home computer and broadband connection for the ongoing stream: upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. The cloud service loops uploaded videos; it does not broadcast a camera feed.

  • Nothing has to stay on at home for the stream to keep running.
  • Any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps streams as made, at one flat price per slot.
  • Automatic recovery is available if YouTube drops the stream.
  • The first day is free with no card. The monthly option is $9.99 per month.

Copyright and eligibility still matter for looped video

Technical continuity does not establish that you have the right to broadcast the recording or that a channel meets YouTube’s rules. Before looping a documentary, music, or other media, confirm you have the necessary rights and check YouTube’s current policies for live content, copyright, and monetization. Repeating a video does not make copyrighted material yours, and using StreamNeo or FFmpeg does not change the platform’s rules.
