For a continuous sequence of prerecorded videos, use OBS’s VLC Video source: install VLC, add the source to a scene, add your media files, and enable Loop Playlist. If by “scene playlist” you mean automatically queueing whole OBS scenes, the official OBS documentation does not describe a built-in scene-playlist feature. You can organize scenes in a scene collection and switch between them with transitions, but that is a different workflow.
First, decide what you want the playlist to contain
Media files in one scene
Use a VLC Video source when you want videos to play one after another in a single scene, then repeat. OBS documents playlist, loop, and optional shuffle controls for this source. VLC must be installed, and 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. See the OBS Media Sources guide.
Different scenes or layouts
Use separate scenes for distinct compositions, such as a title card, a documentary segment, and a break screen. Change the live scene using OBS transitions. Scene Collections save scenes and sources for different productions; they do not function as a queue that automatically advances through scenes. They also do not save output settings: OBS says to use Profiles for those. See OBS Scene Collections and the OBS Studio Overview Guide.
Set up a looping media playlist in OBS
- Install VLC. Match its architecture to OBS. If you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC.
- Open or create a scene. In the OBS Scenes panel, select the scene that should display the playlist, or create a new scene for it.
- Add the VLC source. In Sources, select +, choose VLC Video, and create or select the source.
- Add media files. In the source properties, add the video files in the order you want them to play. Check the file paths and confirm that each item opens correctly.
- Enable looping. Turn on Loop Playlist to repeat the list. Enable shuffle only if you want playback order to vary.
- Check visibility behavior. OBS documents that a VLC Video source stops when hidden and restarts when visible by default. If you reuse the source across scenes, check this setting: switching away may stop playback, and switching back may restart it.
- Preview the full sequence. Confirm that files play in the intended order, that the last item returns to the beginning when looping is enabled, and that the video fits the scene as intended.
Organize multiple layouts without confusing them with a playlist
For a channel that alternates between layouts, create a scene for each composition and use transitions to change the live scene. A scene collection is useful for saving the scenes and sources for a particular production; use an OBS Profile separately for output settings. The documented features support organizing scenes and changing between them, but do not establish an automatic scene scheduler. OBS plugin documentation is available at OBS plugin documentation; verify any third-party plugin’s current capabilities and compatibility before relying on it for unattended scheduling.

Connect OBS to YouTube
- Enable live streaming on your channel. YouTube says the channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. First-time live-stream enablement may take up to 24 hours, so do not leave setup until the planned broadcast.
- Get the stream details in YouTube Studio. Create or schedule a live stream and retrieve its stream key. Treat the key as a password: do not publish or share it.
- Configure OBS for the encoder stream. In OBS, open Settings > Stream, select YouTube or the relevant YouTube service/server option, and enter or select the stream key as appropriate. OBS’s overview guide describes the stream settings and recommends testing scenes and configuration before the first broadcast. YouTube’s encoder setup guide covers creating a stream with encoder software or hardware.
- Start with a private or unlisted test where suitable. Check the YouTube preview and OBS output before relying on the setup for a public continuous channel.
YouTube’s current live-stream help page states a limit of 10 active streams per channel and 3 per stream key. These are platform limits, not targets for a single-channel setup. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility and getting-started information.
Make the setup suitable for an always-on channel
A looping playlist does not by itself make a stream unattended or guarantee it will stay live. OBS and YouTube’s setup documentation explain configuration and testing, but do not establish an uptime guarantee or a universal automatic recovery arrangement. A local OBS stream depends on the computer, power, network connection, and sources continuing to work.

- Run the playlist for longer than a brief preview and check that it loops as intended.
- Confirm the computer will not sleep, restart for updates, or lose power during the planned broadcast.
- Check the internet connection and monitor YouTube Studio for stream status or warnings.
- Decide who will notice and address a stopped stream, failed media source, or lost connection.
- Review YouTube’s copyright rules and monetization policies for the specific videos and audio you plan to use. Permission to upload or stream material is not automatic just because it is prerecorded or repeatedly broadcast.

VLC Video does not appear in Sources
Install VLC and make sure its architecture matches OBS. The OBS guide specifically calls for 64-bit VLC with 64-bit OBS. Restart OBS after installing VLC if the source is still unavailable.

The playlist does not repeat
Open the VLC Video source properties and check that Loop Playlist is enabled. Preview through the final item rather than assuming the setting took effect.
Playback starts over after switching scenes
Check whether the VLC source is hidden in the scene you left. Its documented default behavior is to stop when hidden and restart when visible. Review the source’s visibility behavior or arrange the scenes so the source remains visible as required.

The stream never becomes live
Confirm live streaming is enabled for the channel, the correct stream key is entered in OBS, and YouTube Studio is receiving the encoder feed. If this is the channel’s first live broadcast, YouTube says enablement can take up to 24 hours. Check for channel restrictions as well.
The stream stops after a power or network interruption
OBS setup does not establish automatic recovery or uninterrupted operation. Restore power or connectivity, check OBS and YouTube Studio, and restart the encoder stream if needed. For an unattended channel, plan monitoring and recovery in advance or evaluate a hosted service.
