For a typical pre-recorded SDR video, set OBS’s YouTube Live output to Rec. 709, leave HDR off, and set the Media Source’s YUV Color Range to match the file’s actual range. OBS defaults that source setting to Partial, but the right choice depends on the video. Enable Loop on the Media Source to replay it. A long-running stream does not call for different color settings.
Set up a looping video source
- In OBS, add the local video as a Media Source.
- Open that source’s properties and enable Loop. OBS describes this option as replaying the file after playback completes. See the OBS Media Sources guide.
- In the same properties, find YUV Color Range. OBS documents Partial as the default. Match the setting to the file’s actual range rather than assuming the default is correct for every video.
Looping is a playback behavior; it does not determine color space or range. Those are separate settings in the video path.
Use Rec. 709 for ordinary SDR
For a standard SDR YouTube Live stream, target Rec. 709 and 8-bit SDR. YouTube’s live encoder guidance states: “Color space: Rec. 709 for SDR.” YouTube transcodes live streams into output formats for viewers on different devices and network conditions, so configure the ingest signal rather than trying to set every viewer’s rendition. See YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
Check the source range separately
Color space and YUV range are related but not interchangeable. The Media Source range setting applies to that file, and OBS’s documented default is Partial. The available information cannot identify the correct range for an unspecified video or every playback and encoder chain. Check the source metadata if possible, then make a private or otherwise appropriate test stream and inspect the result. If blacks look crushed or washed out, revisit the source-range match instead of treating a global Rec. 709 selection as a universal fix.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Set the live encoder’s keyframes and bitrate
YouTube recommends a 2-second keyframe frequency and says not to exceed 4 seconds; it specifies CBR for live encoding. Choose the bitrate using YouTube’s resolution and frame-rate guidance and your reliable upload capacity. Color-space selection does not replace these encoder requirements.
Use HDR only for a genuine HDR workflow
HDR is not a general quality switch for SDR footage. If the prerecorded video is SDR, leave the output SDR unless you have deliberately converted the material and configured the entire chain for HDR. YouTube’s documented OBS HDR setup calls for OBS 30.1 or later, an HDR source, HEVC hardware encoding, P010, and Rec. 2100 PQ or HLG; YouTube recommends HLG. See YouTube’s HDR live-streaming guidance.

| Configuration | Use when | Key settings |
|---|---|---|
| SDR | The video is ordinary SDR footage | Rec. 709, 8-bit SDR; match the Media Source YUV range to the file; use the recommended live encoder settings. |
| HDR | The source and playback/output chain are genuinely HDR-capable | OBS 30.1 or later, HDR source, HEVC hardware encoding, P010, and Rec. 2100 PQ or HLG (YouTube recommends HLG). |
HDR compatibility depends on the source or capture/playback path, color format and space, encoder, and stream configuration—not just one OBS checkbox. YouTube says unsupported viewer devices receive SDR. OBS’s HDR capture guide includes a device list tested in 2022; treat it as dated rather than a complete current compatibility guarantee. See OBS’s HDR capture guide.
Make a test before relying on the settings
- Confirm the Media Source loops and that the transition at the end of the file is acceptable.
- Check that SDR material is being sent as Rec. 709 SDR, not accidentally as HDR.
- Verify the per-source YUV range against the file and look for unexpected crushed blacks or washed-out levels.
- Check the encoder’s CBR setting, keyframe interval, and bitrate against YouTube’s guidance and the available upload capacity.
Keep a reusable OBS setup
Save output settings in an OBS Profile; OBS stores scenes separately in Scene Collections. If you are recording or repackaging the video before streaming, OBS recommends MKV recording for resilience if recording stops ungracefully and provides built-in remuxing to MP4. These are workflow safeguards, not color corrections. See the OBS recording formats guide and OBS Profiles guide.

Troubleshoot common color problems
The picture looks washed out or too dark
Check the Media Source’s YUV Color Range against the actual file range. OBS defaults this property to Partial, but that does not prove Partial is right for every asset. Test a change with a private or otherwise appropriate stream; the result can also depend on the playback and encoding path.
The SDR video looks wrong after enabling HDR
Return the output to SDR and use Rec. 709 for ordinary SDR footage. HDR settings require a real HDR source and compatible format, encoder, and stream configuration; they do not automatically improve an SDR file.

The video stops instead of repeating
Open the Media Source properties and enable Loop. Confirm that OBS is playing the intended local file and that playback reaches its end.
Color looks different to some viewers
YouTube transcodes a live ingest for different devices and network conditions. Validate the OBS output with a test and account for the fact that downstream renditions and display capabilities differ; an OBS color setting cannot force every viewer’s screen to behave identically.
