Use CBR for an OBS stream to YouTube Live. YouTube’s live encoder settings specify constant bitrate (CBR). Choose a bitrate for your codec, resolution, and frame rate, then confirm your connection can sustain it and test the stream before leaving it unattended. A playlist does not have a documented exception to YouTube’s guidance.
CBR or VBR: which should you use?
CBR means constant bitrate rate control; VBR means variable bitrate rate control. For OBS sending a live stream to YouTube, use CBR because YouTube’s live encoder settings specify “Bitrate encoding: CBR.” This is the clearest destination-specific guidance for the choice.
That recommendation does not mean YouTube’s cited guidance declares VBR universally unsupported or says it will always fail. The official pages cited here do not provide a controlled, long-duration CBR-versus-VBR comparison for 24/7 playlist streams. Static or low-motion footage may place different demands on compression than fast-moving scenes, but that does not displace YouTube’s stated live-ingest setting.

Choose a bitrate for your stream
Use YouTube’s bitrate recommendations for the codec, resolution, and frame rate you have selected—not one bitrate for every stream. The following H.264 figures are YouTube’s current live-ingest recommendations; they are not guarantees about what your connection can carry.

YouTube publishes separate values for AV1 and H.265. For example, its live encoder settings recommend 10 Mbps for 1080p30 and 12 Mbps for 1080p60 for those codecs. Check the current table for your exact codec and format before setting OBS.
Check upload capacity, not just the speed-test peak
Your upload connection must sustain the configured bitrate reliably. OBS’s Stream Connection Troubleshooting guidance says bitrate depends on stable upload speed and service limits; it offers 75% of total upload speed as a starting point. Treat that as a rule of thumb, not a universal threshold or guarantee. A single best-case speed test does not establish sustained capacity.

Set the keyframe interval
YouTube recommends a 2-second keyframe frequency and says not to exceed 4 seconds in its live encoder settings. Set the keyframe interval accordingly in OBS for the encoder you are using, alongside the bitrate and video format.
Test before leaving a playlist unattended
- Match the planned stream settings. In OBS, configure the same codec, resolution, frame rate, CBR bitrate, and keyframe interval you intend to use for the live playlist. Compare those choices with YouTube’s current live encoder settings.
- Run representative playlist material. Include the kinds of movement, audio, and scene changes the stream will actually contain. YouTube advises testing with similar audio and movement, then monitoring stream health and messages.
- Watch the live preview and stream health. Check YouTube’s messages and OBS statistics for dropped frames, disconnections, or other signs that delivery is unstable. A successful start alone does not show that the full setup will remain stable unattended.
- Verify the actual playback transitions. As a practical check for a 24/7 schedule, confirm the playlist’s repeat, transition, and restart behavior in the setup you will use. YouTube’s cited guidance does not prescribe a test duration or promise continuous operation.
- Make one change at a time if the test fails. If delivery is unstable, first investigate the network path and whether the configured bitrate is sustainable; do not assume that switching to VBR will fix it.
Troubleshoot dropped frames and interruptions
OBS explains that dropped frames can mean the connection to the remote server is unstable or the configured bitrate cannot be sustained. These are delivery problems; changing rate control alone is not a diagnosis.

- Dropped frames or disconnections: Try a lower bitrate that fits stable upload capacity, and investigate the network route and selected destination server. OBS says dynamic bitrate can lower quality as a fallback, but does not resolve the underlying cause.
- Unstable Wi‑Fi: OBS recommends wired networking because Wi‑Fi may be unstable. Test with Ethernet if practical, especially when interruptions coincide with wireless instability.
- Problems persist on a wired connection: Check the modem, router, network cable, network card, and other network devices as possible causes. OBS advises speaking with your ISP if you are unsure about hardware replacement.
- Frames skip or the picture distorts without network drops: Consider encoding overload as a separate problem. OBS’s x264 guide discusses system limits, resolution, frame rate, and encoder preset as factors that can cause skipping or image distortion. Network bitrate changes may not address an encoder or system bottleneck.
- The stream looks healthy at first but later fails: Review OBS and YouTube messages around the interruption and test the playlist’s transitions and restart behavior. CBR, a particular bitrate, or a wired cable cannot guarantee continuous operation.
