Then compare their current locations with the paths saved in OBS and relink anything that moved. The timing alone does not show that Windows caused the problem: OBS says updates should leave its settings intact, though other software can interfere with OBS after an update.
Why OBS media files go missing
An OBS Media Source points to a local audio or video file through its Local File setting. If that file is moved, its drive is disconnected, or the path OBS expects no longer resolves, the source can show as missing even though the file itself is intact.
After an update, treat the timing as a clue to investigate—not proof of an update bug. Check the file, volume, path, and OBS source before looking for a broader system issue. OBS’s Media Sources guide explains the source and its file setting: OBS Media Sources.
Find and relink the missing files

Confirm the media is still available
Open File Explorer and browse to the affected audio or video file. If it is on an external or secondary drive, reconnect the drive and make sure Windows can open the file.

Compare the current path with OBS’s saved path
Check whether the file or its containing folder was moved. For removable or secondary storage, see whether the drive letter changed; a different letter can make the old path invalid even when the drive and file are present.

Use OBS’s missing-files workflow
In OBS, open the missing-files interface. Its message reads “Some files are missing since you last used OBS.” Use Search Directory… to search a folder, or Select file… to choose a replacement. OBS reports how many files it found. If the media is in a different folder, select the appropriate location and check that the references resolve.

The labels and missing-file message are visible in the OBS Studio English interface strings.

Verify the repaired scene
Save the repaired scene collection, reopen the affected scene, and confirm that each source plays as expected. This final check helps catch a file that was relinked to the wrong version or a source that still points to an unavailable location.

Keep paths stable to prevent repeat problems
Use a consistent drive letter for removable media
If you move a removable drive between PCs, configure it to use the same drive letter on each one so OBS can keep resolving the same path. This is the approach recommended in the OBS community’s portable-mode guide. The guide dates to 2016, so treat it as a practical path-management suggestion rather than current product documentation.
Mount the volume in a folder
Windows can make a drive available through a folder path instead of relying on a drive letter. Microsoft documents ways to configure this in Disk Management, Command Prompt, or PowerShell. A folder mount point requires the volume to use NTFS or ReFS; follow Microsoft’s instructions for your Windows edition and take care if other applications already depend on the drive path: Assign a mount point folder path to a drive.

Whichever approach you choose, keep the media in a stable folder on a volume that is mounted and reachable whenever OBS needs it.

If more than local media sources are failing, consult the OBS Help Portal for general update troubleshooting. OBS notes that security software may scrutinize an updated application and recommends checking its whitelist settings.
