How does the March 17 Strands theme connect the answers?
The March 17 board used St. Patrick’s Day as its surface clue, while the answer set gathered words associated with green, Irish-themed celebration, and related cultural references. The theme is therefore broader than a list of specifically Irish words: the intended connection comes from the holiday’s familiar imagery, celebration, and cultural associations.
The words also create several recognizable St. Patrick’s Day associations. GREEN is stated directly through GOGREEN; PARTY reflects the holiday celebration; FLAG and LIGHT can connect to festive decoration; and PEPPER, BERET, ROOM, THUMB, and GODDESS add the less immediately obvious entries that make the board a word-search challenge rather than a simple vocabulary quiz. The published answer guides confirm the complete set, but the exact visual placement must be solved from the day’s letter grid.

NYT Strands is a connected-letter word-search game. Players trace adjacent letters in the grid to form words associated with the daily theme, including a special spangram that summarizes the theme and reaches from one side of the board to the opposite side. Mashable’s explanation of the March 17 puzzle describes the connected-letter format, theme words, and spangram mechanic.
Players can also find non-theme words. Those words do not belong in the final answer set, but they can help earn in-game hints before the player reveals theme answers. The board is solved when the required theme words and the spangram have been found.

What is the best way to use these March 17 hints?
The best approach depends on how much of the puzzle you want revealed. Start with the theme alone if you still want to solve normally, use the first-two-letter sequence if you need targeted assistance, and use the full answer table only when you want the completed list.
| Help level | What you see | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Theme only | “Happy St. Patrick’s Day!” | Solvers who want the strongest challenge |
| Two-letter hints | TH, PA, BE, PE, FL, LI, RO, GO, GO | Solvers who want a nudge while keeping most of the discovery intact |
| Full reveal | All eight regular words and GOGREEN | Solvers checking a completed puzzle or stuck on the board |
When using the hints, try to locate the indicated word before moving to the next pair. Finding an answer can reveal nearby letter paths and make the remaining entries easier to recognize. If the two GO clues cause confusion, remember that GODDESS is a regular theme word and GOGREEN is the spangram.
