For the New York Times Strands puzzle dated Tuesday, June 3, 2025, game #457, the theme is “That’s proprietary!”—a clue to familiar brand names used as everyday words. If you want to solve it yourself, start with the hint below; the full answer list and spangram are farther down.

Theme hint for June 3, 2025

Think of brand names that people commonly use for the product category itself. The puzzle’s theme clue is “That’s proprietary!” and a more direct hint is brand names. Forbes framed the idea as a brand becoming so popular that it becomes a noun.

Progressive hints

For a little more help before seeing the answers, Parade reported these first-two-letter cues for the theme words, in order: VE, JA, KL, PO, and CH. The spangram begins TR and runs mostly horizontally.

Spangram and answers

Spoilers below: the spangram is TRADEMARKED. TechRadar reported that it has 11 letters and crosses from the left edge at the fifth row to the right edge at the sixth row.

  • VELCRO
  • JACUZZI
  • KLEENEX
  • POPSICLE
  • CHAPSTICK

The three contemporary guides—TechRadar, Parade, and Forbes—agree on this answer set for game #457.

Why these words fit the theme

Each theme answer is a familiar brand name used in ordinary speech for a kind of product: for example, people may say “Kleenex” when they mean facial tissue or “Jacuzzi” when they mean a hot tub. That is the puzzle’s wordplay, not a claim that every name has the same legal status or that every generic use is legally permitted.

How Strands works

Parade’s description of the game mechanics says players connect letters to form theme words, which fill the board without overlapping. The spangram describes the theme and touches two opposite sides of the board. Finding three non-theme words earns a hint that highlights the letters of a theme word.
