You can run a prerecorded nursing course as a continuous YouTube Live stream by connecting an encoder or cloud service to a verified, live-eligible channel, then planning for YouTube’s stream interruptions, archive limits, and the course’s rights and learner-tracking needs. A public stream does not, by itself, award nursing continuing education contact hours.
Decide what the stream is meant to do
If the goal is to make a recorded course continuously available, a 24/7 YouTube Live feed can provide public access. If the course is meant to award nursing continuing professional development (NCPD) contact hours, treat that as a separate accreditation and learner-verification project: public access alone does not establish credit eligibility or prove an individual completed the activity.
The right setup depends on whether you need only continuous playback or also scheduled sessions, observability, recovery, archive management, and individual participation records. YouTube’s encoder guidance identifies both hardware and cloud approaches, but does not provide a complete independent comparison of vendors’ current prices, uptime, or support.
Check YouTube eligibility and clear the course materials
Enable live streaming before launch
YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days. First-time live-stream enablement can take up to 24 hours, so do not leave activation until launch day. See YouTube’s live-streaming setup guidance and encoder instructions.

Review rights and platform rules
YouTube requires live content to comply with its Community Guidelines and Terms of Service. Secure permission for every third-party slide, music track, photograph, video clip, and recorded voice in the course. YouTube scans live streams for third-party copyrighted material; a match can replace the stream with a placeholder or interrupt or terminate it. A license does not necessarily prevent an interruption: the rightsholder may also need to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist. Review YouTube’s live-stream copyright guidance and resolve permissions and allowlisting before going live.
Choose how to play the recording continuously
You need an encoder workflow that can keep prerecorded media playing and send it to YouTube Live. YouTube’s verified encoder list names the AJA HELO Plus and describes its PlayToStream function for scheduling prerecorded media. The list also names Gyre as a cloud service for continuous prerecorded streams. These are examples in YouTube’s third-party encoder list, not products made by YouTube; check that a particular device or service meets your operational needs before committing.

| Approach | What it does | What to plan for |
|---|---|---|
| Hardware encoder | A dedicated device sends prerecorded playback to YouTube; YouTube lists AJA HELO Plus as an example with scheduled-media functionality. | Local equipment, connectivity, power, monitoring, and a restart or recovery plan. |
| Cloud streaming service | A cloud service plays prerecorded content to YouTube; YouTube lists Gyre as an example. | Service-specific scheduling, recovery, monitoring, archive handling, and learner participation limitations. Confirm current terms and capabilities with the provider. |
Either approach can deliver a continuous feed, but a YouTube broadcast page is not automatically a learning-management or attendance system. If you must establish who participated and for how long, select and validate a separate method that fits the accreditor’s requirements.
Set up and test the YouTube Live connection
- Verify eligibility. Confirm the channel is verified, live streaming is enabled, and there is no restriction that would prevent the broadcast. Allow up to 24 hours for first-time enablement.
- Create or schedule the stream. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or schedule a live stream for the channel.
- Connect the encoder. Copy the stream URL and stream key from YouTube Studio into the encoder or cloud service’s YouTube connection settings. Treat the key as a credential: share it only with people and systems that need it.
- Load the course recording. Configure the chosen workflow to play the recording or playlist continuously. Check that the video and audio are present and that the playback does not rely on an unattended local session unless that is intentional.
- Run a full-path test. Start the encoder and inspect the preview and stream health in Live Control Room before making the feed public. Test audio, captions, the learner-facing page, and restart or recovery behavior. These are production checks to perform; they are not guarantees from YouTube.
- Go live and monitor. Start the broadcast only after the preview and learner-facing experience are correct. Keep a way to identify and respond to a stopped or interrupted stream.
Plan the archive and session lifecycle
YouTube says live streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; its guidance does not promise automatic archiving for longer streams. A 24/7 broadcast therefore needs an explicit recording plan. Consider dividing programming into shorter sessions or using a separate recording workflow, and test the transition before launch. Do not assume a continuous stream will produce a complete, automatically archived course recording.

Keep course availability separate from NCPD credit
ANCC describes eligible NCPD activities as addressing a knowledge, skill, or practice gap for professional registered nurses, using evidence or best-available evidence, and being planned independently from ineligible-company influence. Its routes for awarding contact hours include becoming an accredited provider, becoming an approved provider through an accredited approver, or obtaining approval for an individual activity. Confirm the operator’s actual status and the applicable accreditor’s rules before advertising a stream as credit-bearing. See the ANCC NCPD FAQs.
A continuous public stream alone may not provide the learner engagement, evaluation, or completion evidence needed for an accredited activity. ANCC defines enduring material as an on-demand activity completed at a time chosen by the participant. Its 2025 NCPD Accredited Provider Policy and Operations Manual says enduring activity content must be reviewed at least once every three years, or sooner when developments require, and its expiration date cannot exceed three years. If a recording is offered to a new learner group, ANCC treats it as a new activity and says engagement, evaluation, and contact-hour criteria should suit that format. Confirm how the provider and accreditor apply these requirements to a continuously looping stream and how completion will be tracked.

ACCME separately says its current Standards for Integrity and Independence apply to accredited education delivered in person or virtually. That applies in relevant ACCME or jointly accredited contexts; it does not establish that a particular nursing course or YouTube stream is ACCME-accredited. Consult ACCME’s standards where that accreditation context applies.

- You cannot start the broadcast: check channel verification, live-stream eligibility, any restriction in the preceding 90 days, and whether first-time enablement has completed.
- The encoder does not connect: recheck the stream URL and key in the encoder and Live Control Room. Limit key access; if it may have been exposed, secure the connection before resuming.
- The live feed is interrupted: check Live Control Room stream health and investigate whether a third-party content match caused a placeholder or interruption. Confirm permissions and, where applicable, rightsholder allowlisting.
- The archive is missing or incomplete: check whether the session exceeded 12 hours. YouTube’s automatic-archive statement covers streams under 12 hours, not longer feeds; use the separate recording workflow or shorter sessions planned for the broadcast.
- Learners cannot demonstrate completion: the public stream alone may not give you individual participation evidence. Confirm an appropriate tracking and evaluation process with the provider and accreditor before promising contact hours.
