The May 31, 2025, NYT Strands puzzle is game #454. Its theme is “Next to the bobby pins,” and its spangram is HAIR ACCESSORIES. Find progressive hints below, followed by a clearly marked answer reveal.

Hints for Strands #454

Start with the theme

The theme clue is “Next to the bobby pins.” Think of other items you might find in the hair-accessories section.

Forbes offers the fill-in-the-blank prompt “Get your ____ did.” The six words TechRadar lists for unlocking in-game hints are STEEL, CRAB, SWEET, CHAIN, CARE, and RACES.

Spangram path

The spangram has 15 letters. TechRadar reports that it starts at the top of the grid in column four and ends at the bottom in column three. Strands uses a six-by-eight letter grid; themed words and a spangram connect the puzzle’s theme across the board. A puzzle appears at midnight in each player’s time zone, so “today” can refer to a different daily entry depending on location.

Spoiler: the May 31 Strands answers

The spangram is HAIR ACCESSORIES (sometimes written without a space as HAIRACCESSORIES). The five theme words are:

  • SCRUNCHIE
  • CLAW
  • CLIP
  • BARRETTE
  • HEADBAND

The clue fits the shared category: each answer is a hair accessory. Forbes quotes the New York Times describing possible Strands themes as “fill-in-the-blank phrases” or categories, steps in a process, synonyms, and homophones. Forbes’ May 31, 2025 guide attributes that description to the Times.
