Hints for the April 20, 2025 NYT Mini
Try each clue before revealing its answer. The Across entries below include four supported fills; for “Scram!”, use the crossing letters to determine which candidate fits the dated grid.
Across
- 1A, “Speaking confidently but dishonestly”: Think of an adjective for smooth, persuasive talk that may not be sincere.
- 5A, “Traditional dance at a Jewish wedding”: The answer is a four-letter dance name.
- 6A, “Scram!”: Several expressions can mean this. Check the entry’s length and crossings before settling on one.
- 8A, “Hyundai electric car with a creatively spelled name”: The model name begins with “I.”
- 9A, “Hoops legend with size 22 shoes”: The clue points to a well-known NBA center.
Down
- 1D, “Africa’s largest exporter of gold”: The dated clue-answer entry points to a five-letter country; treat the broad wording as puzzle context, not a current ranking.
- 2D, “Score that’s nowhere near Mensa-worthy”: Use the crossing letters to pin down the low score.
- 3D, “Baghdad’s country”: A four-letter country.
- 4D, “Loading area for trucks”: Crossings help confirm the fill.
- 6D, “Army soldiers, for short”: Look for an abbreviated plural.
- 7D, “___ and aah”: Fill in the missing interjection.
Answers for the April 20, 2025 NYT Mini
Spoilers below. The dated clue-answer entries support the Across fills shown here, along with GHANA and IRAQ for two Down clues. The available clue listing gives more than one possible synonym for 6A, so its exact fill should be settled from the original grid’s length and crossings rather than guessed from the clue alone.
Across answers
| Clue | Answer |
|---|---|
| 1A, Speaking confidently but dishonestly | GLIB |
| 5A, Traditional dance at a Jewish wedding | HORA |
| 6A, Scram! | Not established by the available clue listing; it gives “GO AWAY” and “GET OUT” as possible synonyms, so use the grid length and crossings. |
| 8A, Hyundai electric car with a creatively spelled name | IONIQ |
| 9A, Hoops legend with size 22 shoes | SHAQ |
Down answers
| Clue | Answer |
|---|---|
| 1D, Africa’s largest exporter of gold | GHANA |
| 2D, Score that’s nowhere near Mensa-worthy | Not stated in the dated clue-answer entry. |
| 3D, Baghdad’s country | IRAQ |
| 4D, Loading area for trucks | Not stated in the dated clue-answer entry. |
| 6D, Army soldiers, for short | Not stated in the dated clue-answer entry. |
| 7D, ___ and aah | Not stated in the dated clue-answer entry. |
How to use crossings to finish uncertain entries
- Enter the supported answers you know: GLIB, HORA, IONIQ, SHAQ, GHANA, and IRAQ.
- Read the letters where those answers intersect the unresolved entries. A crossing can rule out a synonym even when it fits the clue’s general meaning.
- For 6A, compare the available candidates with the actual entry length and the crossing letters. The clue listing alone does not establish which synonym the puzzle uses.
- Check every Down entry against its full clue and crossing pattern before treating the grid as complete.
The published secondary clue-answer pages are useful for the supported fills, but they do not establish a definitive full-grid transcription here. A separate page that purports to explain this puzzle has internally conflicting answer prose and clue lengths, so it is not a reliable basis for filling the uncertain entries.
