Start with Julia Quinn’s eight numbered novels in this order: The Duke and I, The Viscount Who Loved Me, An Offer From A Gentleman, Romancing Mr. Bridgerton, To Sir Phillip, With Love, When He Was Wicked, It’s In His Kiss, and On The Way to the Wedding. Quinn says her books can be read in any order, so this is the official series sequence—not a prerequisite for understanding every story. “All” can also include companion books, epilogues, prequels, and related extras, which sit outside those eight novels.
The eight Bridgerton novels in order
Julia Quinn’s official order FAQ numbers the core series as follows. The novels cover the Bridgerton family’s stories across 1813–1827, according to the author’s series page.
- The Duke and I — Book 1
- The Viscount Who Loved Me — Book 2
- An Offer From A Gentleman — Book 3
- Romancing Mr. Bridgerton — Book 4
- To Sir Phillip, With Love — Book 5
- When He Was Wicked — Book 6
- It’s In His Kiss — Book 7
- On The Way to the Wedding — Book 8
This is the sequence Quinn gives in her official Bridgerton order FAQ. It is the clearest choice if you want to follow the numbered series from its beginning and encounter recurring characters in the order the author grouped them.
What counts as “all” the Bridgerton books?
The eight titles above are the numbered novels. Quinn’s FAQ also lists related works outside that sequence, including a companion novel, an epilogue collection, a graphic novel, and Lady Whistledown anthologies. These are extras rather than additional numbered installments.

The Bridgertons: Happily Ever After
This collection gathers second epilogues connected to the novels and includes the bonus novella “Violet in Bloom.” The epilogues are tied to particular stories, so read the matching novel first. Quinn cautions that some second epilogues may not make much sense without their accompanying novel. The collection’s contents are described on the author’s book page, and the series page also notes the second epilogues.
Queen Charlotte
Queen Charlotte, written by Julia Quinn and Shonda Rhimes, is a companion inspired by the Shondaland television series. Quinn lists it outside the eight-book numbered order; treat it as an optional companion, not Book 9. The author’s series page identifies the collaboration in 2023, while the order FAQ places it among the related books outside the core sequence.

Lady Whistledown anthologies and Miss Butterworth and the Mad Baron
The order FAQ also lists the Lady Whistledown anthologies and Miss Butterworth and the Mad Baron among related titles. They are not numbered Bridgerton novels, so they do not change the reading order above.
Where the Rokesby prequels fit
The four Rokesby novels follow an earlier generation and can be read as a separate series. Their sequence is:
Rank #3
- Because of Miss Bridgerton
- The Girl with the Make-Believe Husband
- The Other Miss Bridgerton
- First Comes Scandal
They precede the Bridgerton novels chronologically, but Quinn says readers do not need to read the Bridgertons first—or the Rokesbys first. Her prequels FAQ places Rokesby Book 1 in 1779, Book 3 in 1786, and Book 4 in 1791; it notes that Book 2 goes to New York City. The Bridgerton order FAQ gives the Rokesby sequence.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Choose a reading path
- For the main family saga: Read the eight numbered Bridgerton novels in order.
- For extra material after the novels: Read The Bridgertons: Happily Ever After after the novels whose second epilogues you want to read.
- For the earlier generation: Read the four Rokesby novels in their own order, either before or after the Bridgertons.
- For related stories: Add Queen Charlotte, the Lady Whistledown anthologies, or Miss Butterworth and the Mad Baron as optional extras.
Quinn’s general book-order FAQ explains that she writes her books so they can be read in any order, while grouping connected stories in sequence. The official order is therefore a helpful route through the series, not a rule that every reader must follow.
