The opening of “Circle of Life” is a Zulu chant before the English verse. Sing it as a call-and-response passage: learn the words and rhythm from a licensed score, practise short phrases while listening to a recording, then join the English lyric, “From the day we arrive on this planet.”
What you’re singing
The chant begins with “Nants’ingonyama bagithi Baba.” The Associated Press reports Disney’s official translation as “All hail the king, we all bow in the presence of the king.” The next phrase, “Hay! baba, sizongqoba,” is translated by Lebo M, as reported by AP, as “Through you we will emerge victoriously.” Translation discussions have included competing interpretations, so treat these as attributed renderings rather than a definitive word-for-word guide. Disney’s soundtrack listing identifies Lebo M as performing the African vocals on the main “Circle of Life” track, with Carmen Twillie performing the song. Elton John’s rendition is listed separately as an end-title version. Disney soundtrack listing
Practise the chant, then enter the verse
- Listen for the transition. Focus first on where the chant ends and the English verse begins; they are distinct sections of the song.
- Use the score for syllables and timing. The licensed SATB choral score labels the opening “Call and Response,” making clear that it is not one uninterrupted line. Follow its notation rather than guessing at the rhythm. Licensed SATB score
- Work in short phrases. Practise a call, then its response, and connect them only after each feels secure. The cited arrangement marks approximately quarter note = 90; this is its tempo marking, not a guarantee that every recording uses precisely that pace.
- Continue into English. Once the chant is comfortable, follow the score into “From the day we arrive on this planet,” the English verse that comes next.
Choose sheet music for your setup
For individual practice with accompaniment, a piano/vocal/guitar edition includes the African Zulu lyrics and continues into the English lyrics. For a group, a licensed SATB double-choir arrangement provides vocal parts and the call-and-response opening. Check the edition and vocal format to ensure it suits your intended use. Pronunciation and pitch: what the scores can establish
The available score listings and preview support learning the syllables and their musical placement, but they do not provide a complete beginner-oriented phonetic pronunciation guide or a verified transcription of the film singer’s exact solo pitches. Avoid relying on invented phonetic spellings or pitch names; use the score for notation and the recording as a listening reference.
