Spoiler-free hints for Connections #820
Connections asks you to divide 16 words into four groups of four. The groups may be linked by meaning, phrases, names, or word construction—and several words are deliberately chosen to appear as if they belong in more than one group.
Here are the clues for the September 8 puzzle, from the least difficult category to the most difficult:
- Yellow: Words meaning nonsense or foolish talk.
- Green: Words that can follow “up” to mean increase or raise.
- Blue: Names associated with fictional spies.
- Purple: Words that can follow “cat.”

NYT Connections answers for September 8, 2025
Warning: the complete solution is below.
| Color | Category | Answers |
|---|---|---|
| Yellow | Nonsense | BALONEY, BULL, BUNK, RUBBISH |
| Green | Increase, with “up” | CRANK, HIKE, JACK, RAISE |
| Blue | Fictional spies | ARCHER, HUNT, PEEL, POWERS |
| Purple | CAT___ | FISH, NAP, TAIL, WALK |
Yellow: Words meaning nonsense
BALONEY, BULL, BUNK, RUBBISH
All four words can describe nonsense, foolish talk, or worthless content. “Baloney,” “bunk,” and “rubbish” are straightforward synonyms for nonsense. “Bull” is the informal shortened form of “bullshit,” and is commonly used to dismiss a claim or statement as untrue or ridiculous.
Green: Increase, with “up”
CRANK, HIKE, JACK, RAISE
Each answer can be paired with up in the sense of increasing, intensifying, or elevating something: crank up the volume, hike up a price, jack up a rate, and raise up an amount or level. “Raise up” is less common in some contexts than “raise,” but it supplies the intended word-plus-“up” connection in this puzzle.
Blue: Fictional spies
ARCHER, HUNT, PEEL, POWERS
These are names of fictional spies from different screen franchises. Sterling Archer is the lead character in Archer. Ethan Hunt is the protagonist of the Mission: Impossible films. Emma Peel is the spy played by Diana Rigg in the television series The Avengers. Austin Powers is the spy-comedy character played by Mike Myers in the Austin Powers films.
Purple: CAT___
FISH, NAP, TAIL, WALK
Putting “cat” before each word creates a familiar compound word or expression: catfish, catnap, cattail, and catwalk. This is the word-completion group, and it is likely to be the least immediately visible because the four answers do not share a conventional meaning on their own.
Why this board could be tricky
The puzzle mixes ordinary synonyms with proper names and phrase completions. HUNT, ARCHER, PEEL, and POWERS do not look alike, so recognizing the fictional-spy connection requires familiarity with several characters. Meanwhile, FISH, TAIL, and WALK become much clearer only after you test them after “cat.”
The word BULL can also create a distraction: it may suggest an animal category, but here it belongs with the words for nonsense. The green group likewise depends on phrase testing rather than a shared standalone definition.
