What was the full word grid?

The 16 tiles in NYT Connections puzzle #1008 were:

DOG, HOG, FROG, SPORK, COG, BLOG, SMOG, DOZE, HORN, GEAR, CORNER, MOTEL, MONOPOLIZE, PINION, BOGART, SPROCKET.

How do the four March 15 Connections groups work?

GREEDILY CONTROL: BOGART, CORNER, HOG, MONOPOLIZE

BOGART, CORNER, HOG, and MONOPOLIZE can all describe taking or controlling something for yourself, often to the exclusion of other people. “Bogart” is the difficult entry because the word is commonly encountered as slang meaning to keep or use something selfishly rather than as a straightforward synonym for “monopolize.”

TOOTHED WHEELS: COG, GEAR, PINION, SPROCKET

COG, GEAR, PINION, and SPROCKET are toothed mechanical wheels or components used to transmit motion. Cog and gear are familiar, while pinion and sprocket are more specialized terms. A pinion is a small gear, and a sprocket is a toothed wheel that engages a chain or similar mechanism.

PORTMANTEAUX: BLOG, MOTEL, SMOG, SPORK

BLOG, MOTEL, SMOG, and SPORK are portmanteaus, also called blended words. Each combines parts of two source words:

  • BLOG comes from “weblog,” with “web” shortened away from the original expression.
  • MOTEL combines “motor” and “hotel.”
  • SMOG combines “smoke” and “fog.”
  • SPORK combines “spoon” and “fork.”

BULL___: DOG, DOZE, FROG, HORN

Adding BULL before each answer creates a familiar word or compound term:

  • BULL + DOG = BULLDOG
  • BULL + DOZE = BULLDOZE
  • BULL + FROG = BULLFROG
  • BULL + HORN = BULLHORN

This is the most direct word-completion group in the puzzle, although DOG and FROG can initially look as though they belong with the other words ending in “-og.”

Why was March 15’s puzzle difficult?

The main trap was the cluster of words ending in “-OG.” DOG and FROG belong to BULL___, while BLOG and SMOG belong to PORTMANTEAUX. The spelling pattern creates a tempting sound-based group that is not one of the puzzle’s intended categories.

The less familiar vocabulary also raises the difficulty. PINION and SPROCKET are mechanical terms that may not immediately be recognized as toothed wheels, while BOGART depends on a slang usage. The four portmanteaus become easier once “blended words” is considered as a category rather than treating the words as unrelated objects.

What is the best solving order for Connections #1008?

  1. Start with COG, GEAR, PINION, and SPROCKET. These four form the most coherent technical group.
  2. Test BULL with DOG, DOZE, FROG, and HORN. The resulting terms—bulldog, bulldoze, bullfrog, and bullhorn—confirm the second group.
  3. Look for blended words. BLOG, MOTEL, SMOG, and SPORK all combine parts of two source words.
  4. Use the remaining words. BOGART, CORNER, HOG, and MONOPOLIZE share the meaning “greedily control.”

How does NYT Connections work?

NYT Connections presents 16 words that players must divide into four groups of four. The official New York Times Help Center explains: “Players are given 16 words and must find groups of four items that share something in common.”

Each group receives one of four colors—Yellow, Green, Blue, or Purple—and the puzzle is designed to include words that may appear to fit more than one category. The official Help Center says every puzzle has exactly one solution and that Connections is free to play on all platforms. Access to archived puzzles is associated with the relevant New York Times Games subscription options, so archive availability can differ from access to the daily puzzle.
