How to play Connections
The New York Times Connections puzzle presents 16 words. Your task is to divide them into four groups of four, with each group sharing a common connection. The groups are color-coded by difficulty: yellow is the easiest, followed by green and blue, while purple is usually the most difficult.
The challenge is that several words may appear to fit together in more than one way. A tempting association is not necessarily the category the editors intended. Connections has one intended solution, with its words and categories curated by editors using the Oxford Dictionary.

NYT Connections #378 answers for June 23, 2024
| Color | Category | Words |
|---|---|---|
| Yellow | SETTLE DOWN! | EASY, ENOUGH, QUIET, RELAX |
| Green | MINOR AILMENTS | BUG, CHILL, COLD, COUGH |
| Blue | WHAT HUMPBACK WHALES DO | BREACH, DIVE, SING, SPOUT |
| Purple | ___ CITY NICKNAMES | MAGIC, MOTOR, SIN, WINDY |
Yellow: SETTLE DOWN!
EASY, ENOUGH, QUIET, RELAX
These words can be used in expressions or commands aimed at calming someone down. “Easy,” “enough,” “quiet,” and “relax” can all tell a person to stop, settle, or reduce the intensity of a situation.
Green: MINOR AILMENTS
BUG, CHILL, COLD, COUGH
Each word can describe a relatively minor illness or physical complaint. A “bug” can mean a mild illness, while a chill, cold, or cough is a familiar everyday ailment or symptom.

Blue: WHAT HUMPBACK WHALES DO
BREACH, DIVE, SING, SPOUT
These are characteristic or commonly discussed humpback-whale behaviors. A whale may breach the surface, dive beneath it, sing, or spout as it exhales.
Rank #4
Purple: ___ CITY NICKNAMES
MAGIC, MOTOR, SIN, WINDY
Add “City” to each word:
- Magic City: Orlando
- Motor City: Detroit
- Sin City: Las Vegas
- Windy City: Chicago
This was the most knowledge-dependent group because the four words do not form an obvious category until they are paired with City.
The complete 16-word board
For reference, the full board was:
EASY, ENOUGH, QUIET, RELAX, BUG, CHILL, COLD, COUGH, BREACH, DIVE, SING, SPOUT, MAGIC, MOTOR, SIN, WINDY
Why this puzzle could be tricky
The board contains several words that are broad enough to invite false groupings. “Cold,” “chill,” and “bug” strongly suggest minor illnesses, but “quiet” and “relax” are more naturally read as instructions. Meanwhile, the purple answers—particularly MAGIC, MOTOR, and WINDY—only become a set when the missing word City is supplied.
Best Value
A useful solving habit is to test a possible group against every remaining word before submitting it. If three words fit comfortably but the fourth requires an unusual interpretation, the group may be a trap or may belong to a broader category than the intended one.
