Hints for Connections #597

Try these clues in order, stopping when you have enough help to solve a group:

  1. Someone who makes other people smile.
  2. Items related to exercises that build strength and endurance.
  3. Popular snacks are represented, but each word is missing something.
  4. Put a common five-letter noun before each word; it usually describes how fast someone or something is moving.

The sixteen terms are MAT, MAR, MOUND, BAND, BENCH, BUMP, JOKER, LAUGH, CARD, CHARACTER, CHESS, DUMBBELL, DEMON, DIAL, SNICKER, and AIRHEAD.

AIRHEAD, MAR, MOUND, SNICKER. Add an S to the end of each to get Airheads, Mars, Mounds, and Snickers.

“Speed ___”

BUMP, CHESS, DEMON, DIAL. Each word completes the phrase “speed bump,” “speed chess,” “speed demon,” or “speed dial.”

How Connections works

Connections is a daily New York Times word puzzle. Players sort sixteen terms into four groups of four based on a shared connection. The categories are color-coded by difficulty, and the links between words can involve wordplay as well as straightforward meaning.
