Need help with NYT Connections #948 for Wednesday, January 14, 2026? Start with the hints below, which move from the least revealing to the most revealing. The puzzle asks you to divide 16 words into four groups of four, and you can make up to four incorrect guesses before the game ends.

Important: This is the January 14, 2026 puzzle, not the separate January 14, 2025 edition.

Purple group hint

One-word nudges

If the category hints are not quite enough, here is one representative answer from each group:

  • Yellow: SECURE
  • Green: USER
  • Blue: RAINMAKER
  • Purple: AUCTION

Before looking below, remember that Connections is built around overlapping associations. A word may appear to fit more than one group, so it is safer to wait until all four words in a category are convincing.

How to approach this grid

The most direct starting point is FAST, FIRM, SECURE, and TIGHT. All four can describe something fixed, firmly held, secured, or unlikely to move.

Next, consider ACCOUNT, CLIENT, CONSUMER, and USER. They all describe a customer, recipient, or end user of goods or services. “Account” is less obviously a person than the other three, but it works in the commercial and customer sense.

One tempting distraction involves FIRM, CLIENT, and RAINMAKER, which may suggest titles or terminology associated with John Grisham. That connection does not produce a fourth matching tile, so it should not be committed to. The game rewards a complete four-word relationship, not an interesting three-word theory.

The remaining eight tiles provide the puzzle’s main lateral-thinking challenge. Four begin with weather-related words, while the other four form familiar expressions when preceded by “silent.”

Spoiler warning: The complete categories and answers appear below.

NYT Connections #948 answers for January 14, 2026

Yellow: FIXED

FAST, FIRM, SECURE, TIGHT

Each word can describe something fixed, held firmly, secured, or not likely to move. This is the puzzle’s most straightforward group.

Green: RECEIVER OF GOODS OR SERVICES

ACCOUNT, CLIENT, CONSUMER, USER

These words refer to a customer, recipient, or end user of a product or service. “Account” can mean the customer relationship or account holder in a commercial context.

Blue: STARTING WITH WEATHER CONDITIONS

FROSTY, MISTLETOE, RAINMAKER, SNOWMAN

The weather-related starts are:

  • FROST + Y = FROSTY
  • MIST + LETOE = MISTLETOE
  • RAIN + MAKER = RAINMAKER
  • SNOW + MAN = SNOWMAN

The category is not saying that every full answer is itself a weather object. Instead, each tile begins with a weather-related term: frost, mist, rain, or snow.

Purple: SILENT ___

AUCTION, MOVIE, PARTNER, TREATMENT

These produce the familiar phrases silent auction, silent movie, silent partner, and silent treatment.

SILENT ___ AUCTION, MOVIE, PARTNER, TREATMENT

Why the blue category is easy to miss

The blue group works at the beginning of each word rather than through the meaning of the complete tile. Frosty, mistletoe, rainmaker, and snowman do not form a normal semantic group when read as whole words. Looking at their first syllables or letter sequences reveals the weather terms frost, mist, rain, and snow.

That construction also explains why the group can compete for attention with other plausible relationships. In a Connections puzzle, always test whether a category is based on a word’s prefix, suffix, phrase completion, spelling, or sound—not only on its dictionary meaning.

What is NYT Connections?

Connections is a daily New York Times word-association game. Each puzzle presents 16 tiles, which must be sorted into four groups of four. The categories range from direct synonyms to phrase completions, wordplay, spelling patterns, and other less obvious relationships.

Players have up to four incorrect guesses. Because red herrings are part of the design, a possible relationship involving three tiles is not enough: look for a fourth entry that supports the same rule before submitting.
