How NYT Connections works
The New York Times Connections asks you to divide 16 entries into four groups of four. Each group shares a connection, but several words may appear to fit more than one category. Those misleading overlaps are part of the puzzle’s design, so a plausible group is not necessarily the intended one.
This guide covers the puzzle published on Monday, December 29, 2025, game #932. It is a retrospective answer guide rather than a claim about the current daily puzzle.

- One group includes words that can describe a general inclination or path.
- One group contains terms familiar from biology.
- One group consists of broad Olympic sporting categories or disciplines.
- The hardest group is based on pronunciation rather than spelling. The entries are not car brands as written.

NYT Connections #932 answers for December 29, 2025
Warning: the complete solution is below.
| Category | Words |
|---|---|
| Yellow — TENDENCY | COURSE, DIRECTION, TIDE, TREND |
| Green — BIOLOGICAL STRUCTURES | CELL, GENE, PROTEIN, TISSUE |
| Blue — SUMMER OLYMPIC EVENTS | ATHLETICS, EQUESTRIAN, SWIMMING, TRIATHLON |
| Purple — CAR BRAND HOMOPHONES | INFINITY, MINNIE, OPAL, OUTIE |
Why these four groups work
Yellow: COURSE, DIRECTION, TIDE, TREND
Each word can refer to a tendency, movement, or general direction. A course is a route or path; direction indicates where something is headed; a tide can describe a prevailing movement or inclination; and a trend is a pattern of change. The words are related by the idea of something moving or developing in a particular way.
Rank #2
Green: CELL, GENE, PROTEIN, TISSUE
These are biological structures or components associated with living organisms. A cell is a basic unit of life, a gene carries hereditary information, a protein performs structural and functional roles in organisms, and tissue is made from groups of specialized cells. This group can look tempting before the rest of the board is sorted because several of the words are strongly associated with science.
Blue: ATHLETICS, EQUESTRIAN, SWIMMING, TRIATHLON
These are broad sporting disciplines or event categories represented at the Summer Olympics. Athletics covers track-and-field competition, equestrian events involve horse and rider, swimming is an aquatic racing discipline, and the triathlon combines swimming, cycling, and running. “Summer Olympic events” is the reported category label, although the entries are broader disciplines or categories rather than four individual event names.
Rank #3
Purple: INFINITY, MINNIE, OPAL, OUTIE
This is the wordplay group. Read aloud, the entries approximate automobile manufacturers:
- INFINITY → Infiniti
- MINNIE → Mini
- OPAL → Opel
- OUTIE → Audi
The spellings do not match the brands. The connection depends on sound-alikes, which is why this category is especially easy to miss if you search only for visual or semantic similarities. INFINITY, for example, may initially suggest an abstract concept, while OUTIE looks like a reference to anatomy. Those alternate associations help hide the car-brand pattern.
The main traps in puzzle #932
SWIMMING and TIDE can initially suggest a water-related group, but they belong to different categories: SWIMMING is part of the Olympic group, while TIDE belongs with words describing tendency or movement.
GENE is an obvious biology signal, but the surrounding board can make it difficult to identify all four biological entries quickly. INFINITY is another deliberate distraction: its meaning points toward mathematics or abstraction, while its role in the solution is phonetic.

The safest approach is to test a possible group against the entire board. If a category leaves behind an awkward fourth word—or creates a second convincing group with the same entry—it may be a red herring rather than the intended answer.
