Spoilers: August 29 Connections answers

Warning: The complete category names and word groups are below.

Yellow: FAMOUS PERSON

FIGURE, NAME, PERSONALITY, STAR

Each of these can describe a notable or famous person. A “public figure,” “famous name,” “television personality,” or “star” can all refer to someone well known.

Green: INCREASE

BALLOON, MOUNT, MUSHROOM, WAX

These words can function as verbs meaning to increase or become greater. Costs or numbers can balloon; an amount can mount; a problem can mushroom; and something can wax, as in waxing enthusiasm or influence.

Blue: PLACES THAT SELL GAS

7-ELEVEN, CHEVRON, GULF, SHELL

Chevron, Gulf, and Shell are familiar gasoline brands. Some 7-Eleven locations also operate convenience stores with fuel pumps, making the brand the less immediately obvious member of this group.

Purple: ___ SPLIT

7-10, BANANA, LICKETY, STOCK

These connect to different meanings and uses of “split.” A 7-10 split is a difficult spare combination in bowling, and a banana split is the dessert suggested by the clue. Lickety-split means very quickly. Stock split is the finance-related phrase; unlike the other entries, it is most naturally encountered with “split” first.

Why this puzzle was tricky

The main trap was the overlap among words that can describe a famous person. STAR and NAME may initially look as though they belong with entertainment, brands, or other possible categories. The board also includes several words that can pair with familiar terms in more than one way.

The purple group is especially deceptive because “split” works across bowling, food, speed, and finance. Once 7-10 and BANANA suggest the phrase, LICKETY and STOCK complete the wordplay category.

Connections is intentionally built around these misleading overlaps: a word may appear to fit a plausible group, but the intended solution requires finding the four-word set that is both complete and more specific.
