Hints for Connections #688
Try the nudges in order before moving on to the category titles or answers.
- One group is about things used in baking or the mixtures they make.
- Another brings to mind a dinner party and what might be on its table.
- Look for things a person might climb—or be challenged to conquer.
- The last group shares a word that can describe several different things; think of a particular shape as well as “Ice, ice baby.”

Answers for April 29, 2025
The puzzle’s 16 words were LADDER, BATTER, SUIT, CANDLESTICK, INFIELD, ROPE, PASTE, PITCHER, GEMSTONE, MOUNTAIN, PLATE, MIXTURE, TREE, DOUGH, RHOMBUS, and PLACEMAT. The completed groups are:
| Color | Category | Words |
|---|---|---|
| Yellow | Cooking concoctions | BATTER, DOUGH, MIXTURE, PASTE |
| Green | Seen on a table at a dinner party | CANDLESTICK, PITCHER, PLACEMAT, PLATE |
| Blue | Things to climb | LADDER, MOUNTAIN, ROPE, TREE |
| Purple | What “diamond” can refer to | GEMSTONE, INFIELD, RHOMBUS, SUIT |
Why the final group is “diamond”
Each word names a different kind of diamond: a gemstone, a baseball infield, a rhombus shape, or a suit in a deck of cards. The puzzle’s overlapping associations can mislead: PITCHER, BATTER, and INFIELD may all suggest baseball, but they belong to three different answer groups here.
