Why the words belong together
Yellow: Places to find sand
A bunker, desert, hourglass, and sandbox all contain or can be places where sand is found. The connection spans a landscape, a golf hazard, a toy, and an object that uses sand to measure time.
Green: Things that move back and forth
A metronome’s arm, a pendulum, a swing, and a windshield wiper all move repeatedly in alternating directions. The category is about their motion, not what they are used for.
#1 Best Overall
Blue: Apparatus-based exercise classes
Barre, reformer, spin, and step refer to exercise class formats associated with equipment: a barre, a Pilates reformer, a stationary bike for spin, and a step platform.
Purple: Featuring birds
This group depends on recognizing a bird associated with each answer: a cuckoo clock has a cuckoo; Froot Loops features Toucan Sam; the Mexican flag depicts an eagle; and a weather vane may take the form of a rooster or another bird. The weather-vane example is not universal—its bird association varies by design.

In Connections, players receive 16 words and sort them into four groups of four based on a shared connection. The New York Times Help Center says the groups are color-coded yellow, green, blue, and purple, from easiest to trickiest, and that each puzzle has exactly one solution. Some words can appear to fit more than one category, which is part of the challenge. Puzzles release at midnight local time. See the NYT Help Center for the rules and archive details.
