Connections #830 answers
| Color | Category | Words |
|---|---|---|
| Yellow | Into it | DOWN, EAGER, GAME, WILLING |
| Green | Furnish | EQUIP, OUTFIT, PREPARE, READY |
| Blue | Organizations or brands with stars in their logos | N.F.L., NASA, PARAMOUNT, SUBARU |
| Purple | Homophones of Genesis figures | ABLE, CANE, EAVE, NOAA |
Yellow: INTO IT
DOWN, EAGER, GAME, WILLING
In this group, “into it” means enthusiastic, interested, or agreeable. Someone who is eager or willing is ready to participate. Informally, someone who is down is agreeable to a suggestion, as in “I’m down to try it.” Game can also mean willing or prepared to take part: “Are you game?”
Green: FURNISH
EQUIP, OUTFIT, PREPARE, READY
These words can describe supplying what is needed or making someone or something ready. You can equip or outfit a person with gear, while prepare and ready mean to make ready for an activity or event.
Ready is the key trap here. It appears to belong with the enthusiastic or willing words, but in this puzzle it functions as a verb meaning “make ready,” placing it in the green group.

Blue: ORGANIZATIONS OR BRANDS WITH STARS IN THEIR LOGOS
N.F.L., NASA, PARAMOUNT, SUBARU
This is the puzzle’s visual category. The connection is not something stated by the words themselves: each name is associated with recognizable star imagery in its logo or emblem. The N.F.L. shield contains stars, NASA’s “meatball” insignia includes stars, Paramount is identified by its star-ringed mountain, and Subaru’s logo features stars.

ABLE, CANE, EAVE, NOAA
Read these aloud and they approximate names associated with the Book of Genesis:
- ABLE sounds like Abel.
- CANE sounds like Cain.
- EAVE sounds like Eve.
- NOAA sounds like Noah.
The purple group depends on sound rather than spelling. NOAA, the abbreviation for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, is especially useful as a final-group discovery because it is pronounced very similarly to “Noah.”

Why Connections #830 was difficult
The board contains several deliberate overlaps. READY, WILLING, and ABLE can initially look like a neat group describing capability or readiness. That impression is broken by ABLE, which belongs with the Genesis name sounds.
READY also seems close to WILLING, but it is being used in the “make ready” sense alongside EQUIP, OUTFIT, and PREPARE. Meanwhile, DOWN may look like the opposite of being enthusiastic. Its informal meaning—agreeable or willing—makes it a yellow answer here.

The blue category is another obstacle because it asks you to recognize logos rather than find a shared dictionary meaning. Once the more direct wordplay groups are removed, the star imagery becomes easier to see.

How Connections works
In the New York Times Connections game, you divide 16 words into four groups of four. Each group has one shared connection, and the categories are color-coded by difficulty: yellow is generally the most accessible, followed by green, blue, and purple. The game is designed to include words that plausibly fit more than one group, so a tempting set is not necessarily the correct one.
There is one intended solution. If a group seems obvious, test every word against the category and look for the remaining words that would otherwise become stranded. That process is especially important when a word such as ready has both a noun-like everyday association and a more specific verb meaning.
