Need help with NYT Connections #817 from Friday, September 5, 2025? The four groups are PIQUANCY, AVAILABLE, MALE ANIMALS, and CHINESE DYNASTIES.

Use the hints below one at a time if you are still solving. The complete word groups and explanations appear farther down, behind spoiler warnings.

Hints for Connections #817

Connections asks you to divide 16 words into four groups of four. Each group has a shared connection, but some words are deliberately chosen to fit more than one possible idea.

  1. Yellow hint: These words describe a sharp, lively, or stimulating quality in flavor.
  2. Green hint: These words can mean available, unattached, or without a date.
  3. Blue hint: These are terms for male animals.
  4. Purple hint: These are names of Chinese dynasties.

Representative clue words are ZING for yellow, FREE for green, JACK for blue, and SONG for purple.

Spoiler: Connections #817 answers

Warning: The complete categories and answers are below.

Yellow: PIQUANCY

KICK, PUNCH, ZEST, ZING

All four can describe a sharp, lively, or stimulating quality, especially in food or flavor. A dish can have a kick, punch, zest, or zing.

Green: AVAILABLE

FREE, SINGLE, SOLO, STAG

Free and single can describe someone who is unattached. Solo means alone or unaccompanied, while going stag means attending an event without a date or romantic partner.

Blue: MALE ANIMALS

BILLY, BUCK, JACK, RAM

A billy is a male goat, a buck is a male deer or several other mammals, a jack is a male donkey, and a ram is a male sheep.

Purple: CHINESE DYNASTIES

HAN, MING, SONG, TANG

Han, Ming, Song, and Tang are all names of Chinese dynasties. Once this group is spotted, it removes several of the puzzle’s most tempting alternatives.

Why this puzzle was tricky

The biggest trap was TANG. It can refer to a sharp or distinctive flavor, so it looks as if it belongs with KICK, PUNCH, ZEST, and ZING. In this puzzle, however, TANG is needed for the Chinese-dynasty group.

STAG creates a second bit of misdirection. It can suggest a male animal, but its intended meaning here is “without a date” or unaccompanied. That makes it part of AVAILABLE, not MALE ANIMALS.

The cleanest route is therefore to look for the four dynasty names first: HAN, MING, SONG, TANG. Next, the animal terms form a clear group: BILLY, BUCK, JACK, RAM. With those removed, the remaining eight words separate into the flavor-related terms and the words meaning unattached or unaccompanied.

How Connections works

In the daily Connections game, you sort 16 words into four groups of four. The groups are commonly shown using four difficulty colors:

  • Yellow: generally the most accessible group.
  • Green: usually a little less obvious.
  • Blue: often dependent on a narrower association.
  • Purple: typically the most difficult or wordplay-heavy group.

A word may seem to fit several categories, but every word belongs in one group only. When two possible groups overlap, look for the category that uses exactly four words and leaves a coherent set of 12 behind.
