Connections #529 was published on Thursday, November 21, 2024. The 16 words split into groups about shirt types, milk-tea spheres, familiar marine invertebrates, and beginnings of pasta names.

Light hints for Connections #529

Before revealing the categories, try sorting the words by these broad ideas:

  • One group contains kinds of clothing worn on the upper body.
  • One group names the chewy spheres found in milk tea or bubble tea.
  • One group consists of familiar sea creatures or marine organisms.
  • One group is made from the beginnings of longer pasta names.

The word bank is: BOBA, FETT, POLO, STAR, OXFORD, SPONGE, BUBBLE, PENN, PEARL, TORTE, CORAL, TEE, ZIT, JELLY, FLANNEL, TAPIOCA.

Category hints

Here are the official-style category clues, without yet showing the full answer groups:

Color Category Anchor word
Yellow Kinds of shirts FLANNEL
Green Spheres in milk tea BOBA
Blue Marine invertebrates, familiarly CORAL
Purple Starts of pasta names FETT

Stronger one-word hints

  • Yellow: FLANNEL
  • Green: BOBA
  • Blue: CORAL
  • Purple: FETT

The last category is the least literal: its entries are not complete pasta names. They are fragments that become pasta names when completed.

Connections #529 answers

Here is the complete solution for the November 21, 2024 puzzle.

Yellow: KINDS OF SHIRTS

FLANNEL, OXFORD, POLO, TEE

These are all familiar shirt terms. A flannel is commonly used for a soft shirt, Oxford refers to the Oxford-cloth shirt style, and polo and tee are everyday names for shirt types.

Green: SPHERES IN MILK TEA

BOBA, BUBBLE, PEARL, TAPIOCA

These words can describe the chewy spheres served in bubble tea or milk tea. Boba and tapioca are the most direct clues, while bubble and pearl appear as alternate terms in descriptions of the drink and its toppings.

Blue: MARINE INVERTEBRATES, FAMILIARLY

CORAL, JELLY, SPONGE, STAR

Each word points to a familiar marine organism or animal name when expanded: coral, jellyfish, sponge, and starfish. The category uses everyday language rather than a strict taxonomic definition, which is why “marine invertebrates, familiarly” is a useful qualification.

Purple: STARTS OF PASTA NAMES

FETT, PENN, TORTE, ZIT

Complete the fragments to get fettuccine, penne, tortellini, and ziti:

Fragment Completed pasta name
FETT FETTuccine
PENN PENNe
TORTE TORTEllini
ZIT ZITi

This wordplay-heavy group is intended to be harder to see than the more literal shirt and milk-tea categories.

Why Connections #529 was tricky

The underwater red herring

After spotting the marine theme, it is easy to overcollect underwater-related words. SPONGE, STAR, CORAL, JELLY, BUBBLE, and PEARL can all evoke the ocean or SpongeBob-related imagery.

The intended split is CORAL, JELLY, SPONGE, STAR for the blue group. BUBBLE and PEARL belong with BOBA and TAPIOCA as milk-tea terms. This is a classic Connections distinction: a word may fit a broad image while belonging to a more specific category elsewhere.

The incomplete-pasta group

FETT, PENN, TORTE, and ZIT look unusual beside the other words because they are not intended to stand alone. Try adding letters to the ends rather than searching for a shared definition. Recognizing familiar pasta beginnings—fettuccine, penne, tortellini, and ziti—reveals the purple group.

A practical solving order

  1. Start with the cleanest literal group. FLANNEL, OXFORD, POLO, and TEE form a strong set of shirt terms.
  2. Look for the direct food-and-drink connection. BOBA and TAPIOCA suggest milk-tea spheres; test BUBBLE and PEARL with them.
  3. Separate broad imagery from exact membership. Among the remaining ocean-associated words, CORAL, JELLY, SPONGE, and STAR make the intended marine group.
  4. Reconsider the leftovers as word fragments. FETT, PENN, TORTE, and ZIT become recognizable pasta names when completed.

Connections permits four mistakes. The groups are also color-coded by difficulty, with the purple group generally the most difficult, so leaving the fragment-based category until the end is a sensible approach.

They are the beginnings of pasta names: fettuccine, penne, tortellini, and ziti.
