Hints for Connections #495
Try these clues before revealing the answers:
- Yellow: A disappointing or unsuccessful thing.
- Green: A chance or opening.
- Blue: A way to pay without using cash.
- Purple: Words that can follow AMAZON.
Connections deliberately includes words that appear to fit more than one group. For example, CHARGE can suggest a legal or electrical meaning, while PLASTIC may initially look like a material rather than a payment reference. The purple group is also based on a shared prefix, not on four words from one subject area.

Spoiler: the answers to Connections #495
| Color | Category | Words |
|---|---|---|
| Yellow | CLUNKER | BUST, DUD, FLOP, MISS |
| Green | OPPORTUNITY | CHANCE, SHOT, TIME, TURN |
| Blue | NON-CASH WAY TO PAY | CARD, CHARGE, CREDIT, PLASTIC |
| Purple | AMAZON ___ | KINDLE, PRIME, RAINFOREST, RIVER |
Yellow: CLUNKER
BUST, DUD, FLOP, MISS
These four words describe a failure, disappointment, or unsuccessful result. A bust can be a failed attempt or venture; a dud is something that does not work or impress; a flop is an unsuccessful performance or project; and a miss is a failure to achieve a target.
This is the most direct group in the puzzle and a useful starting point. The category label CLUNKER is itself an informal word for something unsuccessful or disappointing.
Rank #2
Green: OPPORTUNITY
CHANCE, SHOT, TIME, TURN
Each word can refer to an opportunity to do something:
- You get a chance to try.
- You get a shot at success.
- You have a time or occasion to act.
- You get a turn when it is your opportunity to participate.
The phrases “give me a shot,” “my turn,” and “now is the time” can make this group easier to see once the failure synonyms have been removed.

Blue: NON-CASH WAY TO PAY
CARD, CHARGE, CREDIT, PLASTIC
These words point to paying without handing over physical cash. A card is the payment instrument; a charge is an amount put onto an account or card; credit allows a purchase to be paid for through a credit account; and plastic is an informal term for a payment card.
CHARGE is the likely trap here because it has several common meanings. It can refer to an accusation, an electrical property, or an instruction to move forward. In this set, it is the payment sense that matters. PLASTIC is similarly figurative: the word refers to the physical card rather than to paying with raw plastic as a material.
Purple: AMAZON ___
KINDLE, PRIME, RAINFOREST, RIVER
Add AMAZON before each word:
- Amazon Kindle
- Amazon Prime
- Amazon rainforest
- Amazon River
This is the most wordplay-heavy category. The entries do not all belong to the same real-world topic: Kindle and Prime connect to the Amazon company, while the Amazon rainforest and Amazon River are geographic features. Their shared link is that each forms a familiar phrase after the prefix AMAZON.
How to solve this puzzle without giving away the answer
- Start with the obvious failure synonyms. BUST, DUD, FLOP, and MISS have a clean shared meaning.
- Look for interchangeable opportunity words. CHANCE, SHOT, TIME, and TURN can all describe an opening to act.
- Interpret the remaining words in a payment context. CARD, CHARGE, CREDIT, and PLASTIC become coherent as non-cash payment terms.
- Test a common prefix on the final four. KINDLE, PRIME, RAINFOREST, and RIVER all follow AMAZON.
The key is not to accept a group merely because four words can be connected somehow. Connections has 16 words, four groups of four, and is designed to create misleading overlaps. According to the New York Times Help Center’s explanation of Connections, the categories are color-coded from yellow, generally the easiest, to purple, generally the trickiest. The Times also says that each puzzle has one solution and that its editors curate the words and categories using the Oxford Dictionary.
