Spoiler warning: This guide includes progressive hints and the complete answer to NYT Connections puzzle #478, released Tuesday, October 1, 2024. Stop before the answer section if you only want a nudge.
Connections gives you 16 words to divide into four groups of four. Each group shares a connection, and you can make up to four mistakes before the puzzle ends. The archived puzzle number, date, board, and solution below are corroborated by third-party answer guides, including Guidantech’s October 1 guide.
Connections #478: the board
Here are all 16 words from the October 1, 2024 puzzle:
QUICK, LATHER, CURRENT, CONDITION, RAPID, RINSE, HEALTH, SWEAT, NORMAL, WAVE, FORM, SANITIZE, STEW, SHAPE, TIZZY, CASCADE

Several entries are deliberately slippery. Lather, stew, and sweat can describe either ordinary activities or an agitated state; rapid can simply mean fast; and quick may look like another speed-related word. Look for groups that use the words in a particular sense rather than accepting the first connection that comes to mind.

Answer spoiler: the four groups
The complete solution is FLUSTERED STATE, FITNESS, FAST-MOVING WATER, and DISHWASHER CYCLES. The full groupings are also listed in the archived solution from Fortnite Insider.
Yellow: FLUSTERED STATE
LATHER, STEW, SWEAT, TIZZY
To be in a lather, in a stew, in a sweat, or in a tizzy is to be upset, anxious, agitated, or flustered. The overlapping meanings are the trap: lather suggests soap, stew suggests food, and sweat suggests exercise before their idiomatic meanings become clear.

Green: FITNESS
CONDITION, FORM, HEALTH, SHAPE
These words can all describe a person’s physical condition. Someone can be in good condition, in form, in good health, or in shape. This is one of the more direct groups, although condition and form may initially seem broad enough to fit several possible categories.
Blue: FAST-MOVING WATER
CASCADE, CURRENT, RAPID, WAVE
A cascade is falling or rushing water, a current is moving water, a rapid is a fast-moving section of a river, and a wave is a moving ridge or swell of water. Rapid is the likely decoy because it is also a general adjective meaning “fast.”
Purple: DISHWASHER CYCLES
NORMAL, QUICK, RINSE, SANITIZE
These are common dishwasher cycle or function labels. Normal and quick describe cycle types, while rinse and sanitize identify particular wash or finishing functions. This product-specific group is easiest to recognize after the semantic groups have been removed.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A practical solving order
- Start with FITNESS: CONDITION, FORM, HEALTH, and SHAPE make a relatively strong set.
- Look for the idioms: LATHER, STEW, SWEAT, and TIZZY all work with the idea of being highly agitated.
- Use the water vocabulary: CASCADE, CURRENT, RAPID, and WAVE form the fast-moving-water group.
- Leave the appliance settings for last: NORMAL, QUICK, RINSE, and SANITIZE are dishwasher labels.
The key lesson from this board is to test a suspected category against all four words. A word such as quick or rapid may look like a simple synonym for speed, but only one belongs with the water terms, while the other belongs with dishwasher settings.
