The small Star Wars-inspired robot that appeared at NVIDIA’s GTC 2025 keynote was real—but it was not a droid fans can order. The robot onstage was called Blue, a research demonstration connected to a broader collaboration among NVIDIA, Google DeepMind and Disney Research. That work also supports Disney’s expressive, four-legged BDX droids through Newton, a physics engine for robot simulation. Blue, BDX and Newton are three different things, and none is documented as a consumer product.
What was the robot shown at GTC?
On March 18, 2025, NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang presented Blue during the company’s GTC keynote. The compact, Star Wars-inspired humanoid robot moved with a character-like gait. The demonstration gave audiences a glimpse of research into physical robotics and expressive movement, not a product announcement or a full technical specification. NVIDIA’s announcement describes the wider collaboration and its robotics technologies; TechRadar identified the stage robot as Blue in its GTC report.
The name can be confusing because the announcement also discusses Disney’s BDX droids and Newton. Blue is the humanoid research robot seen onstage; BDX is Disney’s entertainment-robot platform; Newton is software used to simulate physics. They are not interchangeable names for one robot.
| Name | What it is | Context | Consumer availability |
|---|---|---|---|
| Blue | Star Wars-inspired humanoid research robot | Shown at NVIDIA GTC 2025 | No retail availability is established in the cited official material. |
| BDX droids | Expressive, four-legged entertainment robots | Disney Research’s character-robot work, including park-focused applications | No retail availability is established in the cited official material. |
| Newton | Open-source physics engine for robot simulation | Collaboration involving NVIDIA, Google DeepMind and Disney Research | Developer technology, not a robot. |
| Droid Depot astromech | Build-your-own remote-controlled Star Wars droid | Paid experience at Walt Disney World’s Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge | Available as a park experience; it is separate from Blue and BDX. |
What each company brings to the collaboration
NVIDIA: robotics tools and accelerated simulation
NVIDIA’s contribution includes Warp, a GPU-accelerated framework used as the foundation for Newton, along with its Isaac robotics and simulation tools. NVIDIA also announced Isaac GR00T N1 at GTC 2025, describing it as an open, customizable foundation model for generalized humanoid reasoning and skills. The announcement does not establish that Blue runs GR00T N1, so the two should not be conflated.

Google DeepMind: simulation and robotics-learning expertise
Google DeepMind contributes work associated with MuJoCo, its physics and robotics simulation environment, and MuJoCo-Warp, a collaboration with NVIDIA intended to accelerate robotics workloads. NVIDIA said MuJoCo-Warp was expected to speed robotics machine-learning workloads by more than 70 times. That is NVIDIA’s announced expectation, not an independently verified benchmark or a claim about a physical robot’s speed. Newton is designed for compatibility with MuJoCo and NVIDIA Isaac Lab.
Disney Research: character performance and entertainment use
Disney’s role is to apply robotics to expressive entertainment characters: movement, timing and reactions that communicate personality in a real space. Its work includes the BDX droid platform and Disney-specific knowledge about physical performance and character behavior. Disney has described BDX as the beginning of a wider effort to create more expressive robotic characters, which signals an ambition rather than a specific product schedule. Disney’s 2026 account describes the BDX program as a yearlong development effort powered by Newton.

Why Newton matters: teaching robots in simulation
Newton is a physics engine, not an AI model and not a robot. NVIDIA describes it as open source, accelerated by Warp, and built to work with MuJoCo and Isaac Lab. The point of simulation is to let developers test physical behaviors in a virtual environment before—or alongside—testing them on real hardware.
- Build a digital environment: Represent the robot, surroundings and relevant physical interactions in a simulation.
- Test and train behaviors: Run repeated trials for movement and interaction without relying on a physical robot for every attempt.
- Transfer promising behavior: Try useful results on physical hardware, where real-world conditions can expose problems that simulation did not capture.
- Refine: Use those results to adjust the behavior or simulation.
This is a general explanation of simulation-to-real-world robotics, not a description of Disney’s complete proprietary development pipeline. Virtual training can reduce some physical trial and error, but it cannot make the real environment disappear: uneven surfaces, crowds, lighting changes and unexpected human behavior can all complicate performance.

What does “AI-powered” mean here?
The public material supports a story about robotics learning, simulation and physical interaction. These tools are intended to help robots learn movement and tasks, improve balance and interaction, respond to surroundings, and produce more expressive motion. They do not establish that Blue is a fully autonomous conversational character.
NVIDIA’s public announcements do not provide a complete specification for Blue’s onboard hardware, model stack, autonomy, battery life or operating range. Nor do the cited materials confirm that Blue can hold open-ended conversations, understand arbitrary spoken commands, perform household tasks or operate unattended. A robot can use learned locomotion or perception while still relying on scripted behavior, remote control or human supervision for other functions; “AI-powered” alone does not say which of those applies.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is Blue an official Star Wars droid?
The careful description is Star Wars-inspired. The design draws on the franchise’s visual language, but the official announcements do not identify Blue as a movie-accurate or in-universe character, or claim it has the abilities of R2-D2, BB-8 or BD-1. A familiar design is not evidence of a film role or canon status.

Can you buy Blue or a BDX droid?
No retail launch, price or home-use version for Blue or the AI-enabled BDX platform is established in the cited official material. Disney’s documented consumer-facing alternative is a separate park experience: visitors can build a custom remote-controlled astromech at Walt Disney World’s Droid Depot. Disney lists the droid at $129.99 plus tax, with a carry box and instructions included; accessories cost extra. That price is for the Droid Depot experience’s astromech, not for Blue or a BDX robot, and the page does not say it includes the NVIDIA, Google DeepMind or Disney Research technology discussed here.
For developers rather than shoppers, NVIDIA’s Isaac robotics platform, its GR00T announcement and Google DeepMind’s MuJoCo project are relevant starting points. These are developer technologies, not ready-to-use Star Wars robots or instructions for buying Blue.
Where could BDX droids appear?
Disney’s descriptions connect BDX to entertainment and park-character work, making parks the natural public-facing setting for the platform. The available announcements do not establish a complete current schedule, locations or guaranteed appearances, and a park demonstration would not mean the robot is available for sale. Check the relevant official Disney park information for current operating details.
What the demonstration does—and does not—show
Blue’s significance is less that a new Star Wars gadget has arrived than that Disney, NVIDIA and Google DeepMind are working on ways to develop physically expressive entertainment robots. Simulation can help teams explore motion and interaction; Disney brings the character-performance problem that makes those movements meaningful. Turning a convincing demonstration into a dependable attraction still involves practical challenges such as safe operation around guests, maintenance, battery life and reliability. The public announcements describe the technology and direction, but do not establish a broad deployment plan or a finished consumer product.
