Yes, a film was made to respond to a viewer’s brain activity—but it did not read thoughts or let someone summon any scene by thinking about it. Richard Ramchurn’s The MOMENT was an experimental, roughly 27-minute film that used a consumer EEG headset and custom software to steer its editing, sound, animation, and narrative among alternatives made in advance. “Control with your mind” is an arresting shorthand; “brain-responsive cinema” is more precise.
What was The MOMENT?
The MOMENT is a dystopian science-fiction film and interactive-art experiment by artist and researcher Richard Ramchurn. Its three interlinking stories imagine a future in which brain-computer interfaces are commonplace. The unusual part was not just the subject matter: during a screening, a viewer’s EEG-derived signals influenced how the film unfolded.
In its May 2018 report, MIT Technology Review described the film as about 27 minutes long. Ramchurn’s project website describes it as a film whose brain data affects the edit, sound mix, and narrative, and says each screening can be unique.

- The viewer wore a NeuroSky MindWave headset, which measured electrical activity at the scalp.
- The headset sent data wirelessly to a laptop.
- Ramchurn’s software interpreted incoming data, including a device-generated, attention-related score.
- The software used those values to influence when the film changed shots or story threads and to vary elements such as music, sound, animation, and narrative material.
The viewer did not have to press a button, speak, or deliberately issue a scene-selection command. But that does not mean the computer translated a thought into a specific instruction. It was responding to signal patterns through rules Ramchurn had designed.
What “attention” meant—and what it did not
EEG records electrical activity from the scalp; it does not display thoughts as readable words or reveal a private intention such as “show me the other character.” A consumer headset’s “attention” output is an algorithmic estimate, not a direct or definitive reading of a person’s mental focus. The original reporting itself raised questions about the reliability of consumer devices for measuring attention-like states.
That distinction matters because EEG is a low-resolution, noisy signal. Blinks, facial or jaw movement, other muscle activity, headset contact, fatigue, and electrical interference can affect what is recorded. A change in the film therefore cannot be treated as proof that the system knew exactly what the viewer was thinking or feeling. At most, the software responded to an interpreted signal that could reflect attention, distraction, anticipation, movement, or artifacts.
What could the viewer influence?
| Could influence | Could not do |
|---|---|
| Which prepared shot or narrative thread appeared | Type a thought into the film or request any arbitrary scene |
| How the edit moved between available material | Generate new footage from brainwaves |
| Elements of the soundtrack, sound mix, and animation | Reliably transmit a specific emotion or private thought |
| The combination of recorded story and audiovisual layers | Control the film like a video game with precise, guaranteed commands |
The important creative constraint is that the film’s material already existed. Software assembled or varied prepared alternatives; the headset did not create a new plot on demand. This is closer to steering an adaptive edit than choosing freely from a menu.

From blinking to a less visible form of interaction
The MOMENT followed Ramchurn’s earlier project, The Disadvantages of Time Travel, developed in 2014–2015. According to the 2018 coverage, that experiment used blinking to trigger cuts and attention- and meditation-related scores to help move between dream and reality. The blinking made the interaction more obvious, but could also pull viewers out of the film.
For The MOMENT, Ramchurn moved away from blink-triggered cuts and focused on attention-related data, aiming to make the viewer’s influence less conspicuous and more integrated into the experience. That design choice also makes causality harder to judge: the viewer may not know which signal caused a change, or whether a particular change was deliberate at all.
Billions of combinations—or trillions?
The number of possible versions is not settled by a single, independently audited count. MIT Technology Review reported Ramchurn’s estimate of roughly 101 trillion possible combinations for the 27-minute film. The project website describes more than 18 billion possible narrative combinations. Those figures differ, and what counts as a “combination” can depend on whether one counts edits, story branches, sound variations, animation layers, or complete paths through the work.

It is safest to treat both as creator-reported descriptions of a highly variable system—not as proof that there are trillions of equally distinct, coherent films. More branches do not automatically mean a better story. They also mean more footage and audio to produce, edit, combine, and test than a conventional linear film would require.

One viewer’s film, or a group’s?
The screenings described in the 2018 report were experimental rather than ordinary cinema showings. A small trailer near Nottingham reportedly accommodated around six to eight people, with one person wearing the headset and the others watching the version shaped by that viewer’s data. The film was also associated with the 2018 Sheffield International Documentary Festival.
A group raises a practical question: whose signal should guide the film? The coverage discussed models including one designated controller, averaging audience responses, letting viewers compete, or assigning different people control over separate elements such as cutting or soundtrack. Ramchurn reportedly found that a cooperative approach produced better-flowing films than a competitive one. That is his account of the project’s experiments, not a general scientific finding about audiences.
The official site later promoted live online performances in 2021, including live musicians and a question-and-answer session. These formats underline that The MOMENT was conceived as a performance as well as a film: the viewing conditions and the person or people supplying the data are part of the work.

The most interesting question is not whether a viewer can operate a movie with invisible commands. It is what happens when a film responds to the person watching it. The viewer’s physiological response can influence the next cut or sound; that changing audiovisual experience can then affect the viewer’s next response. In that sense, the audience becomes part of a feedback system.

- Bt/ble Dual mode module and support iOS, Android, PC, and Mac platform. Detects raw-brainwaves, eeg power spectrums (Alpha, beta, etc.), esense meters for attention, meditation, and future algorithms.
- More than 100 brain training games and educational apps available from the NeuroSky online store. Uses a single AAA battery (not included) for 8-hour battery run time
That loop can feel immersive precisely because it does not behave like a conventional remote control. But it also makes the experience ambiguous: a viewer may not be able to tell whether the film changed because of a conscious effort, an involuntary reaction, a noisy reading, or some combination. The uncertainty is both a technical limitation and an artistic feature.
Is this a movie you can watch or buy now?
The available sources establish The MOMENT as an artistic research project and live-performance experiment, not as a mainstream cinema format or a consumer streaming product. The official project page’s visible event listings include performances from 2021; they do not establish a current commercial release or an ordinary at-home viewing route. The project demonstrates one creative use of noninvasive EEG, not that consumer films can generally read thoughts.
So the headline’s promise is real only with an important qualification: a viewer’s brain activity could influence a prepared film’s path, but the system did not understand the viewer’s mind. The MOMENT made the audience responsive material in the edit—not an author issuing precise mental commands.
