The 1995 coming-of-age film pairs four girls in the summer of 1970 with the adult friends remembering it decades later. Christina Ricci, Thora Birch, Gaby Hoffmann and Ashleigh Aston Moore play the younger characters; Rosie O’Donnell, Melanie Griffith, Demi Moore and Rita Wilson play their adult counterparts. The clearest later-career update in the available records is Christina Ricci’s work in Yellowjackets. Ashleigh Aston Moore, who played young Chrissy, died in 2007 at age 26. A sequel has been discussed, but no confirmed production or release was reported in the October 2025 account.
Who played the four friends in Now and Then?
The film follows four childhood friends looking back on a formative summer in 1970. Its distinctive casting pairs a younger and adult performer for each character.
| Character | As a girl | As an adult |
|---|---|---|
| Roberta Martin | Christina Ricci | Rosie O’Donnell |
| Teeny Tercel | Thora Birch | Melanie Griffith |
| Samantha Albertson | Gaby Hoffmann | Demi Moore |
| Chrissy DeWitt Williams | Ashleigh Aston Moore | Rita Wilson |
The AFI’s film catalog and Fandango’s cast listing support the film’s premise and these role pairings. Demi Moore also served as a producer.
What happened to Ashleigh Aston Moore?
Ashleigh Aston Moore, who played young Chrissy, died in 2007 at age 26, according to ABC News’ 2015 retrospective. The report also includes Thora Birch’s memories of making the film with the younger cast. It does not establish a reason for Moore leaving acting, so a specific explanation should not be inferred.

That is not evidence that they stopped working; it means their latest individual projects cannot be reliably summarized here. The film’s paired casting remains the surest guide to who each performer portrayed.
Is a Now and Then sequel happening?
In October 2025, Rosie O’Donnell said a continuation was being discussed with Demi Moore and that other cast members were on board, according to Nine Network’s report.
