Yes, Not Without Hope (2025) is based on a true story. It dramatizes a 2009 fishing trip out of Clearwater, Florida, in which four men were caught in a capsizing at sea. The film is directed by Joe Carnahan and adapts the nonfiction book of the same name by Nick Schuyler and Jere Longman, which its producer describes as a bestseller.
This review looks at what the cast does with that premise, where the exposition and the script get in the way, and what can and cannot be said about how faithful the film is to the real events.
What really happened, and who the film puts on screen
The film follows Nick Schuyler, Will Bleakley, Marquis Cooper, and Corey Smith. The official Paramount+ trailer synopsis sets up the trip this way: “Best friends Nick Schuyler (Zachary Levi) and Will Bleakley (Marshall Cook), and NFL players Marquis Cooper (Quentin Plair) and Corey Smith (Terrence Terrell), depart Clearwater, FL, for a fishing trip 70 miles out in the Gulf of Mexico.” The synopsis then describes a trapped anchor and an approaching storm. The 70-mile figure comes from that promotional copy and has not been independently verified, so treat it as the film’s framing rather than a documented measurement.
The table below maps the cast to the roles the official synopsis gives them.

Where the ensemble carries the film
A survival story with four people on one hull depends on how those people react to each other: who stays calm, who argues, who tries to keep the others functioning when the situation gets worse. That is the structural job the cast is given here. The premise leans on a trapped anchor and a storm closing in, so much of the tension comes from behavior and shared fear rather than from spectacle alone.
RogerEbert.com’s review, published December 12, 2025, calls the film a “respectful and impactful dramatic interpretation,” and that description fits an ensemble-driven approach. The reviews, however, do not give scene-level credit to individual actors, so any claim about a specific moment that a performer owns would go beyond the evidence. What can be said is that the film’s emotional weight depends on the four men feeling like a group of friends and colleagues before the water turns against them.

Zachary Levi and the limits of the headline
The headline says the film is saved by its cast, but the critics do not agree on the lead. TheWrap’s review, also dated December 12, 2025, criticizes Levi’s performance. RogerEbert.com’s review praises the film’s overall treatment of the real events, and its published summary does not single out Levi for criticism or praise. Readers should not treat those two positions as a consensus.
The disagreement matters for how you read the headline. If “the cast” means the ensemble, the claim holds up better, because the film’s strength is in how the group functions together. If it means Levi carrying the film as Schuyler, the claim is contested by at least one major review.

Exposition and pacing
TheWrap describes the film as absorbing but criticizes its clunky exposition. In a survival film, exposition arrives in the first act: who these men are, why the trip matters, what the boat can and cannot do. When that setup lands as dialogue instead of behavior, the audience hears information rather than watching the characters establish it. That is the likely source of the complaint, though the review’s wording is the only evidence available here, and it does not describe specific lines of dialogue.
The overall verdict in that review is that the film holds attention despite the weaker setup. That is a different problem from pacing collapse, and the sources do not establish one.

How faithful is it to what happened?
RogerEbert.com says the re-creation feels true to the real-life events. That is a critical judgment, not a verified historical finding. The available material does not include a scene-by-scene comparison with the book or with the documented events, so the film cannot be credited as historically accurate on the strength of reviews alone. Viewers who want to test specific claims should compare the film with the book directly.

The book, Not Without Hope by Nick Schuyler and Jere Longman, is the source account for the film. The most useful comparison points are these:
Best Value
- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
- Point of view. The book is built on Schuyler’s own account, and the film dramatizes that perspective through a cast of actors.
- Level of detail. A book can hold more interior and procedural detail than a two-hour film. Note which details the film trims and which it keeps.
- Treatment of the ordeal. Compare how each version handles the time on the boat, the storm, and the decisions made under pressure.
Adaptation choices are a matter of checking specific passages, and the sources here do not establish which passages changed. Read the book with the film in mind rather than assuming a particular change happened.
Where to watch
The film has listings on Apple TV, Prime Video, Hulu, and Paramount+. The U.S. listing on Rotten Tomatoes shows a limited theatrical release on December 12, 2025, a streaming release on January 6, 2026, a runtime of 1 hour 59 minutes, and an R rating for language throughout. Those dates apply to the U.S. listing only.
Catalog status varies by country and changes over time, and a listing page does not confirm that a title is currently available to stream or rent where you are. Check the platform in your region before you subscribe or pay for a rental.
Who it suits
- Viewers who want a true-story survival drama focused on group dynamics rather than action set pieces.
- Readers who plan to read the source book and want a film that can be compared with it.
- Viewers who are prepared for exposition that is more explanatory than subtle in the opening stretch.
”
The Bottom Line
Not Without Hope is a based-on-a-true-story survival drama whose ensemble does the most to hold it together. The headline is right about that much: the men feel like a group, and the group is what the film has to make you care about. It is weaker as a claim that one performance carries the film, because the reviews disagree on Levi and the exposition does the film no favors in its opening stretch.
