What does “Not Like Us” mean?
In the song’s battle context, the title and chorus work as a collective taunt: Lamar frames Drake as someone who does not belong to the identity, community, or standards the song invokes. That is a reading of the rhetoric, not a confirmed explanation of Lamar’s intent. No direct statement from Lamar establishing a definitive interpretation is identified in the available sources.
The track also turns Drake’s 2021 album title Certified Lover Boy into an insult. The reference depends on recognizing the album title and hearing it repurposed against Drake; it is wordplay, not evidence for the song’s insinuations about his conduct.
What is the beef between Kendrick Lamar and Drake?
“Not Like Us” was one installment in a highly public exchange of diss tracks between Lamar and Drake in spring 2024. The federal court’s account of the dispute places the song within that sequence, where each artist’s releases answered and escalated the other’s. Reading the track as part of that exchange makes its taunts and references easier to follow than treating it as a standalone statement.

The song is a confrontational attack on Drake’s character and credibility. Its allegations are part of the battle’s rhetoric; their appearance in lyrics, and the fact that they became the subject of litigation, do not establish that they are true.
Who is Kendrick talking about in “Not Like Us”?
The target is Drake. Lamar directs the song’s insults and accusations at him, including through the album-title wordplay. The lyrics also refer to people associated with Drake, but those references remain part of Lamar’s attack and should not be treated as independently verified claims about any person.

What did the legal case decide—and what did it not decide?
In January 2025, Drake sued UMG over the release and promotion of “Not Like Us”; the Associated Press reported that Lamar was not named as a defendant. Drake’s complaint characterized the song’s lyrics as asserting factual allegations. The court considered the challenged material in the context of the public rap battle and the recording’s language. The case concerned whether the challenged conduct and material could give rise to legal liability; it was not a factual determination of whether the song’s allegations about Drake were true or false as biography.
That distinction matters: Drake’s position in a complaint is a litigant’s claim, the lyrics are a diss track’s accusations, and the court’s analysis is a legal decision. None should be substituted for the others.

The Recording Academy’s 2025 coverage records three wins for “Not Like Us” at the Premiere Ceremony and a Record of the Year win at the main ceremony. Those awards document institutional recognition of the recording; they do not validate the song’s allegations.
