Robert Eggers’s Nosferatu draws on both F. W. Murnau’s 1922 silent film and Bram Stoker’s Dracula, but it does not try to reproduce Murnau’s look. Its 1838 setting, deliberately difficult darkness, Romantic-inspired cinematography, and character-specific costumes create a separate, materially grounded world for the familiar vampire story.
How Eggers’s film relates to Murnau’s Nosferatu and Stoker’s Dracula
The 2024 film works from two sources: Murnau’s 1922 Nosferatu and Stoker’s Dracula. Cinematographer Jarin Blaschke said the crew wanted the new film to offer its own interpretation rather than resemble an homage. Kodak’s production account reports that Blaschke revisited both the novel and Murnau’s film while preparing.
Eggers also gives Ellen greater emphasis, according to Blaschke, while keeping the basic story and most of its characters familiar. That shifts the creative question from simply what happens to how the story is made to feel. As Blaschke put it in a Focus Features interview, “This is a story that people have seen many times, so the movie isn’t so much about the ‘what’ as the ‘how.’”
Why Eggers’s childhood viewing of the original mattered
Eggers has described first seeing Murnau’s film at age nine on a VHS copied from a degraded 16mm print. The poor image, he told the Associated Press, made the film feel as if it had been unearthed from the past. Restored versions, by contrast, make details of the makeup clearer. The contrast helps explain why Eggers’s connection to the original is not simply an effort to recreate its visual surface: the memory of an imperfect, uncanny image became part of his own relationship with the story.

Why the remake is set in 1838
Costume designer Linda Muir says the story is set in Germany in 1838. She chose that year with specific clothing details in mind and researched period dress through books and household manuals, including one published in 1838. The research affected choices such as the number of garments, fabric, and the distinctions between characters.
Production designer Craig Lathrop’s team likewise researched architecture, props, and lighting as part of making the period feel like the characters’ practical present, rather than a polished historical display. For Orlok’s castle, Lathrop aimed for deterioration and sparse furnishings instead of a neat, visitor-ready monument. As he told The Credits, “The idea for him, which I agree with, is that the more supernatural events going on, the harder they hit if the world is real.”

How darkness, color, and framing shape the image
Blaschke describes the night interiors—many built around dialogue—as a central challenge. Some scenes were filmed with the lights off or in near-total darkness. He and Muir coordinated the tonal values, textures, and reflective qualities of costumes and furnishings so figures could still be read in low light. Red was generally reserved for blood, making the film’s color choices part of its visual restraint rather than a constant accent.
The compositions are often formal and symmetrical, with controlled or static camera movement. Blaschke also describes a camera that can lead a character through a space and then turn attention elsewhere in the castle. Kodak reports that the production used a 1.66:1 aspect ratio, which Blaschke connected to Romantic landscape references and the need to frame both broad views and groups of characters.

Kodak’s production account says the film was shot on 35mm using ARRICAM ST cameras, vintage Baltar lenses, and specially engineered high-speed Panavision lenses. These choices supported a deliberately shaped photographic image rather than a neutral record of the sets.
What costumes reveal about Ellen and Anna
Muir says Eggers’s version expands Ellen’s backstory. Her clothing was designed to suggest fragility and youth, and the costume team made several nightgown versions to suit different scenes and lighting conditions. Fabric texture and reflectivity mattered, too: the clothes needed to communicate character while remaining visible in the film’s dark interiors.

Anna’s wardrobe makes a contrasting point. Muir describes her as having many new, luxurious outfits that signal wealth. The difference between Ellen’s restrained clothing and Anna’s affluent wardrobe lets costume work carry social and character information without relying on exposition.

The material setting is part of the film’s method: period clothing, researched architecture, props, and a visibly deteriorated castle make the supernatural feel as if it has intruded into an otherwise tangible world. Kodak reports that principal photography took place in the Czech Republic from February through the end of May 2023, over about 65 shooting days, with more than 60 sets at Barrandov Studios and additional locations in the Czech Republic and Romania. Those are production details, not measures of the film’s scale relative to other productions.
