Spoilers for “Solaz del Mar,” the season-three finale of The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon. Daryl and Carol appear ready to sail to America with their group, but Fede returns armed and seeking revenge. Carol tackles him before he can shoot Daryl; stray bullets hit the boat, which catches fire and explodes. The pair are stranded again—and Norman Reedus says the setback is another painful turn in Daryl’s struggle to find a place where he can stop running and fighting.
What happens at the end of Daryl Dixon season 3?
In “Solaz del Mar,” the group seems close to leaving for America by boat. Their departure is interrupted when Fede comes back with a gun. Carol tackles him before he can shoot Daryl, but shots hit the boat. It catches fire and explodes, leaving Daryl and Carol stranded rather than on their way home.

Reedus described the failed departure as “another giant slap in the face” for Daryl: he believed he had done what he needed to do and was finally close to getting on the water. As Reedus put it, the ending is “a U-turn.” The remarks appeared in an Entertainment Weekly interview with Dalton Ross, published October 20, 2025, and syndicated by Yahoo News NZ.
Why does the boat explode, and what does Reedus say it means?
The immediate cause is the confrontation with Fede and the gunfire: Carol stops him from shooting Daryl directly, but stray shots strike the boat. Reedus frames the explosion as more than a logistical delay. It interrupts Daryl just as he thinks he has reached the point where he can leave, extending the story’s question of whether he can ever stop moving from one fight to the next.

Reedus has described Daryl as trying to understand why he cannot sit still, why relationships and talking about his feelings are difficult, and what purpose might finally let him stop. He floated possibilities such as finding land, a partner, or a different purpose; these are the actor’s reflections, not confirmed outcomes for Daryl.
How does the ending connect to the season’s idea of home?
For Reedus, the season asks what home means to Daryl as his understanding of it changes. In an October 15, 2025 interview with AMC, he said, “For this season I feel like the theme is really ‘what is home?’ I think Daryl’s idea of home is changing.” He also connected that question to a line he introduced about Daryl and Carol: “just run and we fight”—and the possibility that this way of living is wrong for them. AMC Talk published the interview before the finale.

What carries into the final season?
The boat’s destruction does not resolve the journey home. Reedus said Daryl’s childhood trauma, including memories of his mother’s death glimpsed in flashbacks, is part of season four. He described Daryl as remembering more of his past as the defenses and habits that have kept him moving are stripped away.
AMC announced in July 2025 that season four would be the series’ eight-episode final season. AMC Global Media Connect currently lists that season for 2027; that is a schedule listing, not a precise premiere date, and schedules can change. Check AMC’s series listing for updates.
Where can you watch the finale?
AMC lists AMC+ as an official viewing option. Availability depends on region and may change, so check the service’s current local catalog. AMC’s finale page also provides an official scene page.
