Spoiler warning: This article contains complete spoilers for No Time to Die (2021), including James Bond’s final mission, Safin’s plan, Mathilde’s identity, and the film’s ending.

Yes, Daniel Craig’s James Bond really dies at the end of No Time to Die. He stays behind on Safin’s island after becoming permanently infected with Heracles nanobots programmed to kill Madeleine Swann and Mathilde if he touches either of them. Bond opens the facility’s blast doors so MI6 can destroy the weapon, then accepts the missile strike rather than risk his family’s lives. However, this is not the last Bond movie overall: it is the end of Craig’s five-film continuity, while the James Bond franchise continues with a future incarnation.

What happens at the end of No Time to Die?

After James Bond kills Lyutsifer Safin, he rescues Mathilde and helps Madeleine escape the island. For a moment, it appears that Bond, Madeleine, and their daughter might finally leave together. The apparent reunion is immediately undermined by what Safin has done to Bond.

Safin has infected Bond with Heracles nanobots. They are not merely a poison that will eventually kill Bond. They remain in his body permanently and have been programmed to identify Madeleine and Mathilde as targets. If Bond has physical contact with either of them, the nanobots will kill them.

Bond therefore cannot safely return to the family he has just recovered. He could theoretically remain alive somewhere away from them, but the film presents that as incompatible with both his mission and his responsibilities. As long as Heracles exists, Bond remains a weapon that could be used against Madeleine and Mathilde.

Instead of escaping, Bond returns to the facility’s control area and opens the island’s blast doors. This gives Q a clear view of the biological-weapons complex and allows MI6 to identify the target. Q warns that Bond has not yet reached safety, but Bond tells M to launch the strike anyway.

Bond then climbs to the roof and speaks to Madeleine by radio. He tells her that Safin is dead and that she and Mathilde are safe. Madeleine understands that the Heracles infection makes their physical reunion impossible. Bond admits that he will not make it off the island, and the two tell each other that they love one another.

The missiles hit the island while Bond remains on the roof. The facility, and presumably the Heracles stockpile, are destroyed with him.

Does James Bond really die?

Yes. The ending is intended to be literal, not a fake-out.

Bond knows the missiles are coming, tells Madeleine that he will not survive, and remains on the island after ensuring that the facility has been targeted. The film does not cut away to suggest that he escaped, and there is no later scene revealing that he survived.

The closing scene reinforces the finality of this version of the character. Madeleine begins telling Mathilde a story about “a man” named James Bond, transforming Bond from a living father into a memory and a legacy for his daughter.

Louis Armstrong’s “We Have All the Time in the World” plays over the conclusion. The song recalls the earlier emotional connection between Bond and Madeleine and functions as a farewell to Craig’s version of the character. It is deliberately tender rather than triumphant: Bond has saved the people he loves, but he cannot share the future he has made possible for them.

Why does Bond choose to die?

Bond’s decision has two connected purposes.

1. He must destroy Heracles

Heracles is a targeted biological weapon developed by MI6 and modified by scientist Valdo Obruchev. The nanobots enter the body through physical contact and can be programmed to attack particular people. Obruchev’s modifications allow them to target relatives and wider genetic relationships, making infected people potential delivery systems.

Safin intends to sell or deploy Heracles as a tool of selective mass assassination. A buyer would not need a conventional bomb or visible attack: an infected person could transmit the weapon through contact with a chosen target. Destroying Safin’s island is therefore essential. Killing Safin alone would not be enough if the weapon remained available to buyers or hostile governments.

2. He cannot return to Madeleine and Mathilde

The nanobots make Bond’s body permanently dangerous to the people he loves. The film does not present a cure, a way to remove the nanobots, or a method of reprogramming them safely. Bond’s reunion with Madeleine is emotionally restored, but physical contact has become impossible.

That detail matters because Bond is not sacrificing himself simply because he has been badly wounded. The choice is deliberate. He chooses to protect Madeleine and Mathilde from both Safin’s weapon and the danger inside his own body.

Bond’s final act is therefore a tactical sacrifice and an emotional one. He ensures that Heracles cannot be distributed, then gives up his own life so that Madeleine and Mathilde can live without him becoming a permanent threat.

Why does Bond kill Blofeld earlier in the film?

Bond kills Ernst Stavro Blofeld without initially understanding that he is carrying Heracles.

During Bond’s prison meeting with Blofeld, the two men make physical contact. Bond unknowingly transfers the nanobots to him. Because the weapon has been programmed to target Blofeld, Blofeld dies shortly afterward.

This scene establishes how Heracles works before Bond understands its significance. Blofeld’s death is not a conventional act of assassination by Bond. It is the first clear demonstration that contact can deliver the weapon and that the programmed target can die after exposure.

Once Bond learns what happened, he realizes the full consequence of his own infection. He is not simply carrying a dangerous substance that can be kept in a container. He himself has become the means by which the nanobots could reach Madeleine and Mathilde.

Is Mathilde really James Bond’s daughter?

Yes. Mathilde is Bond’s daughter.

Madeleine confirms the relationship during the final radio conversation, and Bond recognizes the connection when he sees Mathilde’s eyes. The revelation is placed directly before Bond’s death, so fatherhood is central to the ending rather than a disposable surprise.

Bond has spent much of Craig’s era resisting emotional attachment. His relationship with Vesper Lynd shaped his mistrust and isolation, while his relationship with Madeleine forces him to confront the possibility of a life outside the service. Mathilde makes that possibility concrete: Bond is no longer protecting only a lover or a mission. He is protecting his child.

Madeleine and Mathilde survive the island’s destruction. Nomi also helps protect them during the escape. Madeleine’s decision to tell Mathilde a story about James Bond suggests that Mathilde will grow up with an understanding of the father she lost, even though this Bond cannot be present in her life.

What happens to Madeleine?

Madeleine survives, and the ending does not suggest that Bond rejects her.

The couple’s earlier separation is resolved when Bond learns that Madeleine did not betray him in the way he believed. Their relationship is restored emotionally, but Safin’s nanobots make a normal reunion impossible. Bond stays away because touching Madeleine could kill her, not because he has stopped loving her.

Madeleine leaves the island with Mathilde. The final scene places her in the role of protector and storyteller, carrying Bond’s memory forward for their daughter.

What was Safin’s plan?

Safin’s weapon, Heracles, began as an MI6 biological-weapons project before Obruchev modified it. Its power comes from precision: it can be programmed to target named individuals, then expanded to people with genetic relationships to those targets.

That makes Heracles more than a conventional assassination tool. It can be used against families, political networks, communities, or larger populations. Infected people become unwitting delivery systems, and the target may not realize an attack has occurred until contact has already happened.

Safin imagines himself as an invisible power controlling who lives and dies. His argument is that people want someone to tell them how to live and then want death to arrive without warning. Bond rejects Safin’s claim that their methods are morally equivalent, although the film intentionally presents them as distorted reflections of each other.

The crucial difference is Bond’s purpose. Bond uses lethal force to stop Safin’s weapon and protect others, while Safin seeks control through fear and selective extermination. Bond’s final sacrifice confirms that distinction: he gives up power, escape, and life itself so that other people can remain free.

How does the ending complete Craig’s James Bond arc?

Craig’s Bond begins Casino Royale as an emotionally closed agent who treats vulnerability as a weakness. The films gradually challenge that position.

  • Vesper Lynd exposes Bond’s capacity for love and leaves him deeply wounded.
  • Madeleine gives him another chance at intimacy and a life beyond constant violence.
  • Mathilde forces him to recognize himself as a father and to think about a future he will not personally occupy.

In the earlier films, Bond often survives by shutting people out. In No Time to Die, he makes the opposite choice. He openly tells Madeleine that he loves her, accepts Mathilde as his daughter, and puts their safety before his own survival.

That is why the finale is more than a shock death. It is the conclusion of a character arc in which Bond learns that attachment is not only a vulnerability. It is also the reason to make a sacrifice. His final decision allows Madeleine and Mathilde to live, even though it prevents him from living with them.

Is Nomi the new James Bond?

No. Nomi temporarily holds the 007 designation while Bond is retired, but the film does not establish that she becomes the new James Bond.

Bond reclaims the 007 number before the final mission. Nomi then helps rescue and protect Madeleine and Mathilde, showing that she is an important successor within MI6’s 00 section. The most defensible reading is that Nomi is a successor to the 007 role, not a replacement for the James Bond character.

The film’s ending also does not turn the franchise into a Nomi-led continuation. It closes Craig’s story while leaving the broader Bond series available for a new actor and a new era.

Is No Time to Die the last Bond movie?

It is Daniel Craig’s last Bond movie, but it is not the last Bond movie overall.

No Time to Die concludes Craig’s five-film continuity. Its closing credits say “James Bond Will Return,” echoing the franchise’s long-standing ability to continue after one actor’s era ends. In this context, the line is not evidence that Craig’s Bond survived. It operates on two levels:

  • Within the story: Craig’s Bond dies on Safin’s island, and this continuity ends with his sacrifice.
  • At the franchise level: James Bond will return in a future incarnation played by another actor.

The franchise has since entered a new corporate phase. Amazon MGM Studios, Michael G. Wilson, and Barbara Broccoli announced a joint venture in which Amazon MGM gains creative control of the James Bond intellectual property while the parties remain co-owners.

According to Amazon MGM’s official update dated August 12, 2026, casting for the next Bond film is underway. Denis Villeneuve is attached to direct, with Amy Pascal and David Heyman producing, Tanya Lapointe executive producing, and Steven Knight writing. The announcement does not confirm an actor, and specific casting details should not be treated as official unless a later announcement confirms them.

The current announcements also do not explain whether the next film will directly continue Craig’s continuity. The safe conclusion is that it will be a new James Bond film, not that it will resurrect Craig’s Bond or continue the exact story of Madeleine and Mathilde.

Want to revisit Craig’s Bond era?

If the ending has made you want to watch the complete arc again, the five Craig films are best viewed in release order: Casino Royale, Quantum of Solace, Skyfall, Spectre, and No Time to Die. For readers who want a physical copy of Craig’s final film, a No Time to Die 4K Blu-ray is a natural option, although the exact edition, seller, and availability can vary by market. A Daniel Craig Bond 5-film collection provides the complete continuity in one set.

For production-focused readers, James Bond Archives No Time To Die Edition is a collector-oriented making-of book featuring behind-the-scenes material such as production photography, documents, storyboards, and interviews. It is a more useful companion for understanding how the film’s final chapter was made than a simple plot recap.

Frequently Asked Questions

Could Bond have survived by staying away from Madeleine and Mathilde?

The film does not say that the nanobots instantly kill Bond or that survival is physically impossible. It establishes that they remain in his body permanently and would kill Madeleine and Mathilde through contact. Bond also needs to ensure that Heracles is destroyed, so he chooses a final sacrifice rather than an isolated life that would leave the weapon facility intact.

Why does the movie say “James Bond Will Return” if Bond is dead?

The line refers to the Bond franchise, not to the survival of Daniel Craig’s version. Craig’s Bond dies, but the character will return through a future incarnation played by another actor.

Does Nomi become the next James Bond?

No. Nomi temporarily holds the 007 designation while Bond is retired, but the film presents her as a successor within MI6 rather than as a replacement for the James Bond character.

Is Mathilde’s identity confirmed?

Yes. Madeleine confirms that Mathilde is Bond’s daughter, and Bond recognizes that Mathilde has his eyes. Her existence makes fatherhood a central part of Bond’s final choice.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: James Bond dies at the end of No Time to Die, but the franchise does not end. Bond stays behind to destroy Heracles and protect Madeleine and Mathilde from the nanobots inside him. The death closes Daniel Craig’s five-film story, while “James Bond Will Return” promises a new era rather than Craig’s return.
