Freevee is gone as a standalone consumer app and brand, but Amazon’s free, ad-supported programming did not simply disappear. In the United States, former Freevee movies, shows, originals and FAST channels now appear inside Prime Video under labels such as Watch for free. You do not need a paid Prime membership to watch that free tier, although you do need an Amazon account and a compatible Prime Video app or browser.
What happened to Freevee?
Amazon deprecated Freevee in early 2025 and consolidated its free programming within Prime Video. Amazon describes the resulting free-with-ads catalog as including content formerly associated with Freevee. The practical change is more than a simple name change: the separate Freevee destination no longer operates, while Prime Video now combines free programming with Prime-included titles, rentals, purchases and add-on subscriptions.
Contemporary reporting said the standalone Freevee app would remain accessible until August 2025. That is a reported cutoff window, not a confirmed universal shutdown day for every device, so an old icon may still appear in a launcher or recent-apps list. The supported destination is now Prime Video, not an old Freevee installation. (The Wrap)

Where to watch former Freevee programming
- Open the Prime Video app or visit Prime Video through Amazon.
- Sign in with an Amazon account. A paid Prime membership is not required for the U.S. free-with-ads catalog.
- Browse for Watch for free, free-with-ads or FAST-channel areas, or search for a specific title.
- Check the access label before selecting play. It should identify whether the title is free, Prime-included, available to rent or buy, or locked behind another subscription.
- Expect commercial breaks on free-with-ads programming.
Menus and labels vary by country, device, app version and account. Amazon’s description of the updated Prime Video experience explains why several access types appear together in one interface: Prime Video’s updated streaming experience.
Do you need Amazon Prime?
For viewers in the United States, no paid Prime membership is required to watch the free ad-supported offering. An Amazon account and access to Prime Video are still necessary. Prime membership is for Prime-included benefits and other paid catalog access; it is not a condition of the free tier. Availability and rules can differ in Canada, the United Kingdom and other markets.

What happened to Freevee Originals?
Former Freevee originals are now presented through Prime Video rather than a Freevee-branded app. The historical label remains useful when identifying a show, but it does not guarantee a current access category. Depending on rights and market, an individual title may be marked Watch for free, Prime-included, rent or buy, available through another subscription, or unavailable.

Are the ads still there?
Yes. The former Freevee catalog remains a free-with-ads category. Paying for Prime does not automatically turn those titles into ad-free viewing. Ads in ordinary Prime programming, free-with-ads titles, live events and third-party channels follow different rules, so identify the content category before diagnosing a problem.

Will Prime Video Ultra remove Freevee ads?
Do not buy Ultra solely to recreate an ad-free Freevee app. Amazon introduced Prime Video Ultra in the United States at $4.99 per month in March 2026; it also lists $45.99 annually for eligible annual Prime customers. Amazon advertises ad-free eligible Prime movies and shows, 4K/UHD, Dolby Atmos, up to five concurrent streams and up to 100 downloads. The limits can be subject to title, device and provider restrictions.
Amazon says live events and select ad-supported content may still contain advertising, and that exception includes the practical category represented by former Freevee programming. Ultra is therefore an upgrade for eligible Prime content and technical features, not a direct replacement for Freevee’s free tier. Common problems after the move
The Freevee app is missing
That is expected: the standalone service has been discontinued. Install or open Prime Video instead. Do not sideload an old Freevee application.

An old Freevee icon is still visible
A cached launcher shortcut, recently used-app entry or unrefreshed device catalog can preserve an icon after service support ends. Remove the shortcut and open Prime Video.
A familiar show cannot be found
Search the title in Prime Video, then inspect its current label. A licensing expiration, regional restriction, catalog rotation or change from free to Prime-included, rental or subscription access may explain the result.
The title now asks you to rent, buy or subscribe
Prime Video’s listing is showing a different access category. Do not assume that the title’s former Freevee status still applies.

Ads continue after subscribing to Ultra
Check whether the program is a live event, select ad-supported content, former Freevee programming or third-party channel material. Amazon does not describe Ultra as universally ad-free.

If you only want former Freevee movies and shows, Prime is not necessary for the U.S. free-with-ads tier. Prime may make sense if you also value its shipping and other benefits or want the Prime-included catalog. Amazon currently lists U.S. Prime at $14.99 per month or $139 per year; prices can change, so verify the amount at Amazon Prime.
Amazon also advertises an eligible 30-day trial. Review renewal terms and cancel before the trial ends if you do not want a paid membership: Amazon’s trial information.
Free alternatives outside Amazon
If Prime Video’s mixed storefront is frustrating, other ad-supported services may be easier to browse. Tubi (tubitv.com), Pluto TV (pluto.tv), The Roku Channel (roku.com/whats-on/the-roku-channel), Plex (plex.tv/watch-free-tv) and Sling Freestream (sling.com/freestream) are potential free options. Their current catalogs, device support, prices and ad policies vary, so check each service directly. They are alternatives, not locations for Amazon’s former Freevee inventory.

The bottom line
Freevee is finished as a standalone app and brand. Amazon’s free streaming business continues inside Prime Video, where U.S. viewers can still watch eligible former Freevee programming with ads and without paying for Prime. Treat Prime Video as a mixed storefront: verify the access label for every title, and do not assume that Prime membership or Ultra makes free-with-ads content ad-free.
