Nintendo’s April 2, 2025 Switch 2 Direct set a June 5 release date and U.S. launch prices of $449.99 for the console and $499.99 for a bundle with Mario Kart World. The reveal highlighted a larger screen, mouse-capable magnetic Joy-Con 2 controllers, GameChat and a varied game lineup—but not every announced game was available at launch. Viewer comments reflected both excitement and reservations, especially about price and the launch selection.

When did Nintendo Switch 2 arrive, and what did it cost?

Nintendo announced the console on April 2, 2025, with a release date of June 5. In the U.S., the announced launch prices were $449.99 for the console and $499.99 for a bundle that included Mario Kart World digitally. Nintendo reaffirmed those U.S. prices on April 18, when it said U.S. retail preorders would begin April 24. These are launch prices announced in 2025, not current price quotes. Nintendo of America’s April 18 announcement

For Japan, Nintendo’s April 2 announcement listed ¥49,980 for the system and ¥53,980 for the Mario Kart World set, which included the game digitally. Prices and availability differ by market. Nintendo’s April 2 release also set U.S. launch prices of $79.99 for Mario Kart World and $69.99 for Donkey Kong Bananza in Nintendo of America’s April 18 announcement; those figures are U.S. launch prices from that date, not current quotes.

What changed in the hardware?

Nintendo described Switch 2 as having a 7.9-inch display while keeping the same thickness as the original Switch. The screen is one part of a broader revision: the Joy-Con 2 controllers attach magnetically and can function as a mouse in games that support mouse operation. The console also adds a second USB-C port and 256 GB of internal storage. Nintendo’s hardware announcement

Nintendo Switch 2 System
  • The next evolution of Nintendo Switch
  • One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
  • Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps

Display, storage and TV output

  • Display: 7.9 inches, according to Nintendo.
  • Storage: 256 GB internal. Expansion requires microSD Express cards; the announcement does not describe ordinary microSD cards as the expansion format.
  • Docked video: Output can reach up to 4K with a compatible TV and game, capped at 60 frames per second at 4K. Nintendo’s up-to-120-fps figure applies at resolutions below 4K.

GameChat

Pressing the C button on the right Joy-Con 2 starts GameChat. Nintendo said voice chat could include up to 12 people, while up to four could share screens and use video chat. Video chat requires a compatible USB camera, such as Nintendo’s separately sold camera; voice chat does not. Nintendo originally announced free Open-Access through March 31, 2026, after which a paid Nintendo Switch Online membership would be required. That was the announced access arrangement, not a statement of current service terms. Nintendo’s April 2 release

Compatibility with original Switch games

Nintendo said compatible physical and digital Nintendo Switch games would be supported on Switch 2, while cautioning that some titles might not be supported or fully compatible. This is backward compatibility with exceptions, rather than a guarantee for every original Switch game. Nintendo’s compatibility statement

Which games were announced, and which were launch titles?

The Direct’s lineup mixed games named for launch day with later releases, games given only a season or year, and enhanced editions of older titles. Nintendo Life’s May 1 roundup provides a title-by-title record; the examples below show why an announcement should not automatically be read as a day-one release. Enhanced editions and upgrade paths

The presentation also covered Switch 2 Editions or upgrade paths for existing games, including Super Mario Party Jamboree, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, Kirby and the Forgotten Land, Metroid Prime 4, and Pokémon Legends: Z-A. An upgrade path does not mean every enhancement is free; some may require a separately purchased pack. Nintendo Life’s roundup

GameCube classics

Nintendo announced Nintendo GameCube – Nintendo Classics for Switch 2 through Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack, initially naming The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, SOULCALIBUR II, and F-Zero GX. This was a subscription-based classics announcement, not a list of standalone launch purchases. Nintendo Life’s roundup

What did viewers think of the reveal?

Comments on Nintendo Life and a Reddit reactions thread show a range of self-selected views, not a representative poll of Nintendo customers. Enthusiastic commenters pointed to Mario Kart World, Donkey Kong Bananza, Hades II, third-party ports and the Joy-Con mouse function. Critical comments returned to the console and game prices, the perceived number of appealing first-party launch games, expectations for a new 3D Mario, and whether to wait before buying. Some people liked the reveal but did not plan to buy on day one. Nintendo Life’s roundup and comments · Reddit’s April 2 reactions thread

Two brief comments capture the hesitation without measuring how common it was: “not a day one purchase for me” and “Price killed Day 1 purchase for me.” They are individual remarks in comment threads, not survey results. The Associated Press also quoted London-based video game industry expert Hannah Cowton-Barnes, who said GameChat’s prominence made sense given the popularity of social games such as Mario Kart. That is an analyst’s interpretation, distinct from Nintendo’s own claims. Associated Press, April 2, 2025

What happened after the reveal?

Launch results provide later context, but they do not tell us how representative online reactions were. Nintendo reported that Switch 2 sold over 3.5 million units worldwide during its first four days and called that the highest global first-four-day sales level for Nintendo hardware. This was Nintendo’s company-reported figure, published June 11, 2025, after launch. Nintendo’s June 11 release
