PEOPLE later reported that unnamed sources characterized the moment as a misunderstanding amid cameras—not a feud. Neither actress publicly explained the exchange in the report.
What happened in the viral video?
In its October 14, 2024 report, PEOPLE described footage of Hayek posing with Kidman and Katy Perry for photographs. Hayek put an arm across Kidman’s body, apparently directing her toward the photographers. Kidman removed Hayek’s hand, turned to hug Perry, and exchanged a few words with Hayek before walking out of frame. Hayek and Perry continued posing.
Those are visible actions as PEOPLE described them; they do not, on their own, establish what either woman intended or said. The report does not verify a transcript of their exchange.
Why did a source call the situation “silly”?
PEOPLE quoted an unnamed source who was present at the show saying the actresses “were being bombarded by cameras at the end of the show while in the middle of a conversation.” The source added: “People are looking at clips and making a story out of nothing.”

A separate source described as close to the women told PEOPLE: “This whole situation is silly. Salma and Nicole love and respect each other.” These are anonymous-source claims reported by PEOPLE, not statements made directly by Kidman or Hayek. The report includes no on-record explanation from either actress.
What context is missing from the short excerpt?
PEOPLE also described a separate clip showing Kidman and Hayek smiling together, with Kidman rubbing Hayek’s shoulder. Hayek posted an Instagram carousel from the show that included a photograph with Kidman. Those details provide context beyond the short excerpt, but they do not prove what either woman felt during the filmed exchange.

The event had other connections: Kidman had been announced as a Balenciaga ambassador the previous December, and Balenciaga’s parent company, Kering, is run by Hayek’s husband, CEO François-Henri Pinault. PEOPLE also reported that the show was Kidman’s first public appearance since her mother died in September 2024. The report does not say these facts caused or explain the interaction.

The clip alone does not establish a feud. PEOPLE’s unnamed sources rejected that interpretation, but because neither actress is quoted directly, the report cannot establish their private intentions or provide a first-person account of the moment. The most grounded conclusion is that a brief exchange was interpreted online as tense, while the footage and the anonymous explanations leave the precise conversation unknown.
