Nicolas Cage Warns Young Actors About AI: “Protect Your Instrument”

Nicolas Cage’s warning to young actors was straightforward: do not casually surrender control of your voice, face, body, imagination or performance to a production’s digital pipeline. Speaking at the Newport Beach Film Festival Honors Brunch on October 20, 2024, he said, “This technology wants to take your instrument.” He was warning about digital replicas and altered performances—not condemning every visual effect—and about the pressure new performers may face when a job depends on accepting broad scanning or likeness clauses.

What Nicolas Cage actually said

At the Newport Beach event, Cage described acting as an organic, handmade process. His “instrument” meant the complete performer: voice, face, body, movement, imagination and the choices that make a performance human. His concern was that an employer could capture those elements, change them later or create scenes the actor never performed.

The warning was aimed especially at emerging actors, who may have less bargaining power than established stars. Cage’s point was practical as well as artistic: read what a production can do with a scan before agreeing to it.

He returned to the subject while accepting a Best Actor award for Dream Scenario at the Saturn Awards on February 2, 2025. Cage said robots cannot reflect the human condition and warned against allowing machines to “dream for us.” Those remarks were a continuation of his creative and labor concern, not a new industry rule. Why Cage distrusts digital manipulation

Cage has connected his warning to his experience with his Superman appearance in The Flash. He said the finished sequence differed substantially from what he believed he had filmed and described Hollywood’s expanding use of AI-related technology as frightening and inhumane. Available reporting establishes a dispute over digital alteration; it does not establish that his entire appearance was generated by generative AI. Cage himself has expressed uncertainty about whether particular work was AI or conventional CGI. (WIRED)

In the same WIRED interview, he worried that studios could place digital versions of his face, body, voice or famous characters into new productions after his death. He has also discussed being scanned for productions and the possibility that a scan made for one job could be reused in ways he did not authorize. These are Cage’s concerns and reported experiences, not proof that every scanned performance will be misused.

Digital replica, digital alteration and synthetic performer are different

Calling every digital effect “AI” obscures the contract question. A scan is a capture process; its later use might involve CGI, a digital double, facial replacement, machine learning or generative systems.

Term Meaning Why it matters
Employment-Based Digital Replica (EBDR) A digital replica of a performer’s voice or likeness created in connection with a motion-picture or series job, using digital technology and the performer’s physical participation, to portray the performer in material they did not perform. Scanning on a set for later scenes is the clearest example; consent, notice and use terms are central.
Independently Created Digital Replica A replica created without the performer’s physical participation and outside a specific project in which the performer worked, then potentially licensed to a producer. Its contractual treatment differs from an EBDR; no blanket claim of control over every imitation is accurate.
Digital alteration Changing a real performance, such as modifying facial movement, voice, age or body, beyond customary post-production edits and fixes. Additional consent may be required under applicable union terms.
Synthetic performer A wholly digital character or performer not necessarily based on one identifiable actor. Union rules provide notice and bargaining rights, not an automatic ban.

What SAG-AFTRA protections provide

The 2023 TV/Theatrical Agreement created the framework most often cited in coverage of Cage’s warning. For performers covered by that agreement, the principal protections included:

  • Notice: generally at least 48 hours before an employer creates an employment-based digital replica, unless the performer is hired less than 48 hours before the scan.
  • Clear consent: consent to creation and informed consent to use, presented clearly and separately in the circumstances covered by the agreement.
  • Specific intended use: a reasonably specific description of what the replica will do; materially different uses generally require new consent.
  • Payment: compensation for creation and use in applicable situations, including residuals when replica use would have generated residuals had the performer done the work personally.
  • Alteration limits: consent before digitally altering a performance beyond customary post-production edits and fixes.
  • Voice coverage: the protections apply to voice as well as visual likeness.

The contract text and summary are published by SAG-AFTRA and in its agreement summary PDF. SAG-AFTRA also cautions that vague or buried language may not satisfy the agreement’s requirements. (SAG-AFTRA AI resources)

What the agreement does not guarantee

These are contractual guardrails, not a universal veto over synthetic media. A producer seeking to use a wholly synthetic performer must give the union notice and an opportunity to bargain under the cited framework, but the agreement does not require a human actor for every role.

  • A producer may still decline to hire a performer, subject to applicable law.
  • Nonunion productions and performers outside the agreement may have different protections.
  • Employers may own materials created from a performer’s work while consent clauses restrict particular uses.
  • First Amendment-related uses—including commentary, criticism, scholarship, satire, parody and some documentary, historical or biographical work—can receive legal protection.
  • Posthumous rights vary by jurisdiction and by the contract; union provisions add protections but do not make every unauthorized imitation automatically illegal.
  • Background performers can face scanning for crowds or repeated appearances, with different payment and employment rules from principal performers.

As of 2026, readers should not assume the 2023 language is the operative text. SAG-AFTRA’s current AI page says members ratified a successor TV/Theatrical Agreement in June 2026, adding further restrictions on synthetics. The specific 2026 provisions should be checked before treating any 2023 clause as current. (SAG-AFTRA Artificial Intelligence)

Questions a young actor should ask before signing

  1. Will I be scanned, voice-recorded or otherwise captured for a replica?
  2. Exactly which elements are being captured: face, voice, body, movement, age, dialogue or a whole performance?
  3. Is the replica limited to this project, specified scenes and named media, or can it be reused?
  4. Can the producer alter my performance or generate new material from the capture?
  5. Is fresh consent required for a later use, sequel, advertisement, game, dubbing or different territory?
  6. What are the creation fee, use fee, term, territory and residual arrangements?
  7. What happens to the replica after the contract ends, and what posthumous rights are addressed?
  8. Does the clause use broad terms such as “digital double,” “simulated likeness” or “synthetic likeness” without defining them?
  9. Who can review the language before I sign—my union, representative or qualified entertainment lawyer?

The real issue behind Cage’s warning

Cage is not arguing that every computer-assisted effect destroys acting. His objection is to allowing a performer’s human choices to become an editable asset that can be changed, extended or reused without meaningful control. A newcomer may agree to a scan because refusing could cost a job; that economic pressure is precisely why notice, specific consent and compensation matter.

The practical lesson is narrower and more useful than “AI will replace actors”: identify what is being captured, define what the production may do with it, secure payment and reuse terms, and obtain advice when the language is unclear. Cage’s “instrument” is not just a recognizable face. It is the whole performance and the performer’s say in how that work lives afterward.
