What happened to Rob and Michele Reiner?
Rob Reiner, 78, and Michele Singer Reiner, 70, were found dead at their Brentwood residence in Los Angeles on December 14, 2025. The initial medical-examiner findings reported by The Associated Press described both deaths as resulting from multiple sharp-force injuries.
The Los Angeles Police Department identified Nick Reiner as the person arrested in connection with the deaths. According to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s announcement, prosecutors allege that the deaths occurred during the early morning hours, that Reiner fled the residence, and that he was arrested later that evening in Exposition Park.
Those details describe the prosecution’s allegations and the authorities’ account of the investigation. They are not a judicial finding that Reiner committed the offenses. Complete autopsy reports and much of the investigative evidence were not publicly available in the reporting reviewed for this article.
What is Nick Reiner charged with?
On December 16, 2025, Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman’s office announced two first-degree murder charges against Nick Reiner, who was 32 at the time. The charges concern the deaths of both of his parents.

The office also said that a decision on whether to seek the death penalty would be made later. The latest reporting available for this article does not establish that prosecutors have formally made that request.

A criminal charge is a formal accusation, not proof of guilt. The prosecution must still present admissible evidence, and Reiner has the right to challenge that evidence through the court process.

Why did Reiner’s lawyer change?
Reiner initially retained private attorney Alan Jackson. Jackson later withdrew from the case and said the reason was one he could not disclose. After Jackson’s withdrawal, the Los Angeles County Public Defender’s Office represented Reiner, with Kimberly Greene appearing for him at the February arraignment.
The trust litigation described below could affect whether private counsel returns, but the available reporting does not establish that Jackson has resumed representation. AP reported that Jackson said his firm could potentially return if funds became available.
Who is Nick Reiner?
Nick Reiner is one of Rob and Michele Reiner’s children. Before the criminal case, he was publicly associated with the 2015 film Being Charlie, which he co-wrote with Matt Elisofon. Rob Reiner directed the film.
Being Charlie deals with addiction, rehabilitation, homelessness, and a difficult father-son relationship. Nick Reiner had discussed years of addiction, repeated attempts at rehabilitation, and periods of homelessness in interviews and other public accounts reported by the Los Angeles Times.
That history is relevant only as biographical context. It does not establish that Reiner committed the charged offenses, explain a motive, prove intoxication, or establish his mental state at the time of the alleged conduct. Addiction history alone is not evidence of violent behavior or criminal responsibility.
For optional background viewing—not as a commentary on the charges—readers can look for a physical edition of Being Charlie. The film is the film Being Charlie, which Nick Reiner co-wrote with Matt Elisofon, and it provides context about his publicly documented creative work rather than proof concerning the criminal allegations.

A 2026 Washington Post profile also reported that people who knew Reiner described concerns about his behavior and possible mental-health issues. Much of that reporting relied on anonymous sources. Those accounts should not be treated as an independently established diagnosis, a court finding, or an explanation of the alleged killings.
What is the trust-fund dispute?
In June 2026, Reiner filed a petition in Los Angeles County court seeking access to money from a trust established by his parents. The petition is a separate trust dispute; it is not a ruling on the murder charges and does not determine whether Reiner is entitled to the money.
According to AP reporting, the trust was created in 1993. Reiner’s petition says that half of the funds was to be distributed when he turned 30 and the remainder when he turned 35. It alleges that the amount due at age 30 was not paid and asks the court to make funds available for legal expenses and basic support while he is incarcerated. The petition says the trust contains at least $1.5 million.
The trustee’s position and the final outcome of the petition were unresolved in the sources reviewed. A hearing was expected in August 2026, but this research pass did not locate a reliable official disposition confirming whether the court granted, denied, or modified the request.
How California inheritance law may relate
California Probate Code section 250 generally prevents a person who feloniously and intentionally kills a decedent from receiving certain property or benefits from that person’s will or trust. That rule may become relevant to inheritance from the victims’ estate if the legal requirements are established.

It does not automatically resolve whether money in a separately established children’s trust is presently payable. It also does not establish that Reiner committed the alleged killings. The trust court’s decision and the criminal case are separate legal matters.
What authorities have not disclosed
- Motive: Authorities have not publicly disclosed a confirmed motive in the sources reviewed.
- Complete forensic evidence: Initial medical-examiner findings were reported, but full autopsy reports were not yet publicly available in the latest court coverage reviewed.
- The full discovery record: The defense was still awaiting additional investigative material as of the April hearing.
- Death-penalty decision: The District Attorney’s Office had not announced whether it would seek the death penalty.
- Trial outcome: There had been no trial verdict or finding of guilt as of August 12, 2026.
- Trust disposition: The available reporting did not confirm the outcome of Reiner’s request for access to trust funds or whether private counsel would return.
Because the case is pending, details sometimes repeated online—such as an alleged weapon, an exact sequence of events, a specific motive, or claims about mental illness—should not be treated as established unless they are later introduced in court or confirmed by an appropriate official source.
What happens next?
The next reported criminal-case date is September 15, 2026, for further proceedings related to the preliminary hearing. The preliminary-hearing stage is part of the process used to determine whether the case can proceed toward trial; it is not a final determination of guilt.
Future developments may include additional discovery, decisions about the prosecution’s sentencing position, rulings on evidentiary or procedural issues, and a determination of whether the case proceeds to trial. None of those outcomes can be assumed in advance.
