The available sources do not establish whether a post-trial motion or appeal has since been filed or resolved.
What happened to Mindi Kassotis?
Mindi Mebane Kassotis was 40 when her remains were found on December 2, 2022, at a hunting club spanning parts of Liberty and McIntosh counties in Georgia. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) says investigators identified her on May 11, 2023, after seeking help from the FBI with investigative genetic genealogy. Court TV reports that remains were discovered in multiple locations near Riceboro; the case can be understood without graphic detail.
The GBI said Mindi and Nicholas were living in Savannah at the time. Its account of the discovery and identification is available in the agency’s May 2023 release.
Who is Nicholas Kassotis?
Nicholas James Kassotis, also known as Nicholas Killian James Stark, was arrested in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, on May 12, 2023, in connection with Mindi’s death, according to the GBI. He was identified in coverage as a former JAG officer. The arrest marked the beginning of the criminal case against him; the later jury verdict established its adjudicated outcome.

What happened at trial?
The trial opened with opposing accounts. Prosecutors argued that Kassotis killed Mindi, while the defense denied responsibility and presented an alternative account, according to trial coverage. Those positions were arguments, not findings by themselves. The jury later returned guilty verdicts.
Pre-verdict reporting also described prosecution allegations about the couple’s circumstances. Such claims should be understood as allegations unless tied to evidence accepted by the jury or a court finding. A 2026 secondary overview discusses reported evidence including surveillance, financial records, phone or GPS data, and a knife; those details are not necessary to establish the verdict and should not be treated as independently verified testimony or exhibits here.

On August 14, 2025, a Liberty County jury found Kassotis guilty on all 12 counts, according to the Coastal Courier’s verdict report. Superior Court Judge Paul Rose sentenced him to life in prison without the possibility of parole plus 25 years. The report attributes to Rose the statement, “This is truly a heinous crime.” Court TV also reports the conviction and sentence in its coverage of the case.
The charges the GBI listed at the time of arrest included malice murder, felony murder, aggravated assault, tampering with evidence, and removal of body parts from the scene of death or dismemberment. That list describes arrest-stage charges, not a substitute for the later verdict report’s account of the 12 guilty counts.
