Yes—you can broadcast a podcast episode on YouTube over a BSNL connection. Create or schedule a YouTube live event, enter its stream URL and key in an encoder such as OBS, and play the episode through it. The deciding factor is not your plan’s advertised download speed: it is the sustained upload capacity available to the encoder, with enough headroom for audio, network variation, and other users.

What upload speed do you need for YouTube Live?

YouTube says a stream’s total bitrate must fit within the available upload bandwidth and recommends leaving 20% headroom. That means the connection needs to carry the configured video bitrate plus audio, with additional capacity left over. Other devices uploading or downloading on the same connection can affect stability. YouTube’s figures below are encoder guidance, not a guarantee of what a BSNL line can deliver.

H.264 ingest setting Minimum video bitrate Recommended video bitrate
1080p30 5 Mbps 14 Mbps
720p30 3 Mbps 8 Mbps
480p30 0.4 Mbps 4 Mbps

These are video bitrates; audio adds to the outgoing stream. For stereo, YouTube lists 128 kbps as an advanced audio setting. Measure upload performance where and when you expect to stream, then choose conservative settings that leave the recommended margin. If the line cannot sustain the recommended bitrate for a resolution plus audio and headroom, lower the bitrate or resolution rather than relying on the minimum figure as a stable target. See YouTube’s encoder settings and streaming tips.

How to stream a prerecorded podcast episode using OBS

  1. Check live access and prepare the episode. Sign in to the YouTube channel that will host the broadcast and confirm live streaming is available. Prepare the episode video or visual layout, audio, title, description, thumbnail, and credits. Confirm you have rights to rebroadcast the episode and to use any music, clips, or other included material.
  2. Create or schedule the event. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create a stream or schedule it for later. Scheduling creates a watch page you can share in advance. Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for the event. You can set latency and DVR options in YouTube’s live settings; for a one-way episode broadcast, normal latency is generally more suitable than optimizing for live interaction. Lower latency can increase buffering. Review YouTube’s live stream settings.
  3. Connect OBS to YouTube. In OBS, open Settings → Stream, select YouTube if available or a custom RTMPS service, and enter the event’s server/stream URL and stream key when prompted. Treat the key like a password: do not show it on screen or share it. YouTube’s encoder setup guide describes the platform-side workflow.
  4. Set encoder output to match the connection. In OBS output and video settings, select H.264, constant bitrate (CBR), the chosen resolution and frame rate, and a bitrate the tested line can sustain. YouTube recommends a keyframe interval of two seconds and says not to exceed four seconds; it lists AAC or MP3 audio. Its recommended H.264 video rates are in the table above. If you select 720p30, for example, do not assume that an advertised BSNL plan speed proves the line can sustain YouTube’s recommended 8 Mbps video rate plus audio and 20% headroom.
  5. Feed the episode into OBS. Add the prerecorded video as a media source and confirm its playback and audio routing. Check that the image is framed correctly and that audio is audible without clipping. For an episode with a static visual, use the intended image or layout; a camera, microphone, or capture card is not required just to rebroadcast an existing recording.
  6. Measure upload speed and choose settings conservatively. Test on the same computer and connection you will use for the event, preferably at the expected broadcast time. TRAI identifies its MySpeed app or portal as a way to measure broadband speed. Repeat the test if results vary, consider other household or office traffic, and leave YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom above total stream bitrate. A wired Ethernet connection may reduce local wireless instability; it does not increase the upload rate provisioned by the ISP.
  7. Rehearse the full stream. Start an unlisted or otherwise suitable test event, run the episode or a representative section with similar audio and movement, inspect the YouTube preview, and check stream health. Test well before the scheduled start. If you need a local recording too, confirm OBS is saving it and check the resulting file.
  8. Go live and monitor. Start OBS, verify the Live Control Room preview and stream-health status, and start the event as configured. Watch for buffering, dropped frames, or audio problems during the broadcast. If the stream struggles, reduce bitrate or resolution and pause competing uploads or downloads. When finished, stop the encoder and verify the archive; YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived.

What a BSNL connection can—and cannot—tell you

BSNL plan names and advertised speeds do not establish the upload speed at your location. TRAI says it does not prescribe a single minimum broadband upload or download speed for all services; providers declare typical speeds, and customers can measure performance with MySpeed. Check your own plan’s terms, fair-use status, location-specific availability, and measured upload rate. See the TRAI broadband FAQ.

Published plan examples are regional, not a universal BSNL tariff or evidence of upload performance. The BharatNet FTTH plans page lists packages with fair-use thresholds and reduced speeds after those thresholds. A separate BSNL Chennai Bharat Fibre plan sheet updated 1 October 2025 is a dated Chennai-region example. Neither establishes which offers are available to you or the sustained upload rate your stream will receive.

Latency, connection choice, and stream rights

  • Choose latency for the kind of broadcast. Lower latency is useful when you need rapid audience interaction, but it may raise the chance of buffering. For a prerecorded episode without live conversation, normal latency is usually the practical choice. YouTube’s live settings guide explains the available controls.
  • Prefer a wired connection when practical. YouTube recommends hardwiring where possible. A cable can avoid some local Wi-Fi interference, but it cannot fix a congested ISP uplink or increase your subscribed upload capacity.
  • Confirm episode and music permissions. Check rights for the podcast recording and every embedded track, excerpt, or other material before rebroadcasting. Do not assume that having published an episode previously clears it for a new live stream.

Common problems and fixes

Symptom Likely cause What to do
Buffering or unstable stream health Configured bitrate exceeds available upload capacity, or competing devices consume bandwidth. Retest upload speed, pause other traffic, and reduce bitrate or resolution while preserving headroom.
Dropped frames despite a fast download test Download speed does not measure the upload capacity the encoder needs; Wi-Fi or congestion may also interfere. Measure upload performance on the streaming computer at broadcast time and try Ethernet if practical.
YouTube does not receive the stream Wrong event URL or stream key, or an encoder service configuration mismatch. Compare OBS’s service and server fields with the event details in Live Control Room; re-enter the key privately if needed.
Episode video plays but audio is missing or distorted OBS media-source audio routing, mute state, or levels are incorrect. Check the source’s audio routing and mixer meters, then rehearse and listen through the YouTube preview before going public.
Scheduled broadcast is not ready at start time Encoder was not started early enough to confirm the preview and stream health. Connect OBS ahead of the event, verify the preview, and only then start the broadcast.
