Find the first point where the stream falls behind before changing settings: the encoder, the VPS relay, the VPS’s outbound network, or YouTube’s ingest. YouTube’s “not receiving enough video” warning describes what YouTube is receiving; by itself, it does not identify which part of that path is responsible. The right fix depends especially on whether FFmpeg is encoding video on the VPS or only forwarding an already encoded stream.
First determine what “dropped frames” means in your setup
A stream can look choppy for different reasons. FFmpeg may report dropped or duplicated frames while encoding, the VPS may fail to forward packets steadily, the outbound connection may be unstable, or YouTube may report that its incoming video is insufficient. Those are related symptoms, but they are not interchangeable. You need to compare the encoder’s output, what the VPS receives and sends, host measurements, and YouTube’s health timeline.
- Encoder evidence: FFmpeg’s complete log and periodic progress output show whether its processing is keeping pace and whether it reports dropped or duplicated frames. Interpret those messages in the context of the command and FFmpeg build; an isolated
-roption is not a universal detector or fix. - Relay and host evidence: compare the stream entering the VPS with the stream leaving it, while observing CPU use, load, memory pressure, and outbound throughput.
- Destination evidence: note the exact YouTube Live Control Room health messages and when they occur, then correlate their timing with the encoder and VPS observations.
No logs, VPS plan limits, CPU metrics, packet-loss measurements, or reproduction tests are available for this particular stream, so there is no evidence for one universal root cause or a guaranteed fix.
Record the stream configuration before changing it
Write down the actual input and output resolution, frame rate, video and audio codecs, video bitrate, and whether the VPS transcodes or stream-copies the video. Also record the encoder command or application settings and the time of each YouTube health warning. YouTube’s bitrate guidance varies with codec, resolution, and frame rate, so “the bitrate” is not meaningful without the rest of that configuration.

Confirm which machine performs the encoding. If FFmpeg creates the output video on the VPS, its CPU demand may be relevant. If FFmpeg only remuxes or forwards an already encoded stream, an encode preset is not the first thing to change; inspect forwarding and network behavior instead.
Follow the stream hop by hop
1. Inspect encoder pace and output
If FFmpeg is encoding or transcoding, preserve the full log from a representative run and inspect its periodic progress output. Look for evidence that processing is falling behind, alongside any dropped- or duplicated-frame reports. If the encoder is on a separate computer, inspect its output there as well: a healthy relay cannot restore frames already lost or delayed before the stream reaches the VPS.
Do not treat one FFmpeg message or option as a diagnosis by itself. Compare the report with the output resolution, frame rate, bitrate, command, and timing of YouTube’s health messages.

2. Measure the VPS during the problem
Observe CPU use and load, memory pressure, and actual outbound throughput while the stream is running. A low-cost VPS is not automatically underpowered: capacity and network behavior depend on the provider, plan, region, workload, and conditions during the stream. Measure the host rather than inferring a bottleneck from its price.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- If FFmpeg is encoding on the VPS and CPU use or processing pace indicates a limit, try a less demanding encode preset or reduce resolution or frame rate for a controlled comparison.
- If FFmpeg only forwards video, an encode preset will not address that forwarding path. Check what arrives, what leaves, and whether the VPS can sustain the outbound rate.
- If memory pressure or host load rises at the same time as the stream degrades, include that timing in the diagnosis rather than changing video settings blindly.
3. Check the relay and the path to YouTube
Check NGINX configuration syntax with nginx -t, then examine relevant NGINX, RTMP-module, and host logs for events that coincide with the interruption. Compare incoming and outgoing traffic at the VPS and the YouTube health timeline to locate where the stream first becomes irregular.
NGINX’s general stream-session documentation explains session processing, but it does not establish a universal NGINX RTMP setting that fixes dropped frames. The particular RTMP module and its version matter; do not add an unverified directive or assume a generic NGINX setting will repair the stream.

4. Use YouTube health as one signal, not the whole diagnosis
YouTube Help advises choosing a bitrate suitable for a reliable connection, testing with audio and movement representative of the real stream, and monitoring stream health during delivery. YouTube’s warning that it is not receiving enough video identifies an ingest symptom; use its timing alongside encoder output and VPS measurements to identify the failing hop.
Match the fix to the measured bottleneck
If the VPS is CPU-bound while encoding
Reduce encoding complexity with a faster, less CPU-intensive preset, or lower the output resolution or frame rate and compare encoder pace and YouTube health again. If encoding remains the constraint, move the encode upstream to a machine with adequate capacity and use the VPS as a relay only if measurements show it can forward the resulting stream reliably.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
If outbound capacity or stability is the constraint
Lower the video bitrate to a level the actual path can sustain. If that is not enough, reduce resolution or frame rate and repeat a representative test. Check the VPS’s observed outbound behavior during the run; an advertised or assumed capacity does not establish that the connection is stable at the time of streaming.

If YouTube reports an encoder-configuration problem
Align the output with YouTube’s current encoder guidance. YouTube currently recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval, and no more than four seconds between keyframes. Its guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS ingestion, H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video, and frame rates up to 60 fps. RTMPS is YouTube’s recommended secure extension to RTMP; that recommendation does not show that switching protocols will fix frame drops.
The following H.264 values are YouTube Help’s recommended settings, as accessed in 2026. They are recommendations for the listed format, not a promise that a particular VPS-to-YouTube route can sustain the stream. YouTube also lists lower minimum settings, but a listed minimum is not a guarantee of stable ingest.
| H.264 output | YouTube recommended bitrate | YouTube listed minimum |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps | 5 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 12 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
| 720p at 30 fps | 6 Mbps | 3 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 3 Mbps |
For RTMP/RTMPS audio, YouTube lists AAC or MP3. Its advanced recommendations include 44.1 kHz for stereo and 128 Kbps stereo audio. Consult YouTube’s current encoder settings for the full codec- and format-specific recommendations, since the platform may revise its guidance.

If the available evidence points to another hop
If the encoder is keeping pace and the VPS measurements do not show a forwarding or outbound problem, do not conclude that the VPS price is the cause. Use synchronized logs and measurements to investigate the remaining part of the path. Likewise, changing buffers, upgrading a VPS, or switching RTMP to RTMPS without evidence may alter the setup without addressing the limiting component.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Run a representative preflight
- Use the actual resolution, frame rate, codecs, and approximate motion and audio expected during the stream.
- Test before the event and record the encoder’s progress and any frame reports, VPS CPU and memory behavior, and outbound throughput.
- Monitor YouTube Live Control Room health during the test and note the time and wording of any warning.
- Change one relevant variable at a time, such as bitrate when the path is constrained or encode complexity when CPU-bound, and compare the same observations.
YouTube Help states, “We recommend running a speed test to test your upload bitrate.” It also says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream,” and advises testing with similar audio and movement, monitoring stream health, and reviewing messages during the event.
Troubleshoot by symptom
| What you observe | What to check next | Reasonable next action |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg reports dropped frames while encoding on the VPS | Its full log, processing pace, and VPS CPU/load at the same time | Compare a less demanding preset or lower output resolution/frame rate. |
| FFmpeg keeps pace, but YouTube reports insufficient incoming video | VPS inbound versus outbound traffic, outbound throughput, and the health-warning timeline | Locate the first irregular hop; lower bitrate if the measured path cannot sustain it. |
| The stream is choppy, but no encoder or YouTube warning is recorded | Host logs and measurements during the visible interruption; confirm whether the stream is being transcoded | Collect synchronized evidence before changing relay settings. |
| YouTube reports a configuration warning | Codec, CBR setting, keyframe interval, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate against current YouTube guidance | Correct the setting identified by the warning, then preflight again. |
nginx -t reports a configuration error |
The reported file and line, plus the installed NGINX and RTMP-module configuration | Correct the syntax problem before restarting or reloading; do not add an unrelated directive as a frame-drop fix. |
Keep stream health separate from copyright and channel-policy issues
Copyright, permission to rebroadcast, and YouTube’s rules for reused content are separate from the transport diagnosis. A rights or channel-policy issue is not evidence that the VPS is dropping frames; a healthy technical feed does not establish that the content is authorized or eligible under YouTube’s policies. Confirm that you have the necessary rights for the material and review YouTube’s current live-stream and monetization rules for the channel and content involved.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a 24/7 YouTube channel playing uploaded recordings rather than relaying a live camera or encoder feed, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops uploaded video from the cloud; it is not a repair for an encoder or VPS relay that is dropping frames.
