To run MediaMTX at boot and forward an incoming stream to YouTube, install the binary and configuration in stable locations, create and enable a systemd unit, and configure a path-level forward destination using YouTube’s current RTMPS URL and stream key. The minimal unit below starts MediaMTX after network initialization is requested, but it does not restart a crashed process or guarantee uninterrupted YouTube delivery.

What this setup does—and what it does not

MediaMTX is a live media server and proxy that can forward an incoming stream to another server. Here, a source publishes to a MediaMTX path; MediaMTX forwards that path to YouTube. The source still has to provide the stream, and the forwarded stream must contain both video and audio.

The procedure uses the Linux systemd approach documented by MediaMTX for distributions such as Ubuntu and Debian. The project’s systemd instructions explicitly do not apply to OpenWrt. Check your distribution’s conventions and the documentation for the MediaMTX version you install. MediaMTX introduction · MediaMTX start-on-boot instructions

Install MediaMTX in stable locations

The documented example puts the executable at /usr/local/bin/mediamtx, the configuration at /usr/local/etc/mediamtx.yml, and the unit file at /etc/systemd/system/mediamtx.service. Use those paths consistently below, or change both the install locations and the unit’s ExecStart path to match your installation.

Obtain the Linux release appropriate to your system from the MediaMTX project and place the executable and YAML configuration at those locations. Ensure the executable can be run by the service. The exact download and extraction commands vary by release and architecture, so use the instructions accompanying the version you choose rather than assuming a particular archive name.

Configure forwarding to YouTube over RTMPS

Get the current ingest URL and key

  1. Open YouTube Live Control Room and go to Stream settings.
  2. Click the lock icon to view the RTMPS URL, then copy the stream key from the same control room.
  3. Use the current URL and key shown for your stream. Do not rely on a hostname copied from an older example or publish the key in a public configuration repository, screenshot, or log.

YouTube describes RTMPS as RTMP over TLS/SSL and instructs streamers to use rtmps for both the protocol and server. See YouTube’s RTMPS instructions. MediaMTX’s example hostname is illustrative and may not reflect the current endpoint; its forwarding guide likewise says to check YouTube for the current URL. MediaMTX forwarding guide

Add a forward destination to the matching path

Edit /usr/local/etc/mediamtx.yml and add a forward destination under the path that represents the source stream you publish into MediaMTX. Replace the example path, URL, and key with your own values:

paths:
  mypath:
    forward:
      - dest: rtmps://CURRENT_YOUTUBE_INGEST_URL#STREAM_KEY

The path name must match the MediaMTX path receiving your source. In this configuration format, the destination URL and key are joined with #. Do not copy a certificate fingerprint from an example as though it were universal; certificate details must be verified for the specific endpoint.

YouTube requires the forwarded stream to contain both video and audio. MediaMTX warns that video-only streams are silently rejected. If your intended program is silent, ensure the outgoing stream nevertheless includes an audio track. The requirement and forwarding structure are documented in the MediaMTX forwarding guide.

After=network-online.target
Wants=network-online.target

[Service]
ExecStart=/usr/local/bin/mediamtx /usr/local/etc/mediamtx.yml

[Install]
WantedBy=multi-user.target

Wants=network-online.target requests the network-online target, while After=network-online.target orders MediaMTX after it. The MediaMTX instructions also advise enabling the distribution’s wait-online service. They name systemd-networkd-wait-online.service as an example; the right service depends on your network stack, and that unit may not exist on every system. Check which wait-online service your system uses before enabling it.

This is a boot-start baseline, not a complete resilience policy: it has no Restart= directive, health monitoring, or guarantee of end-to-end delivery. Adding a restart policy is a separate operational choice; test its systemd behavior on the target host rather than assuming the sample provides it.

Reload systemd, enable the service, and start it

  1. Ask systemd to reload unit definitions after creating or changing the file: sudo systemctl daemon-reload.
  2. Enable MediaMTX to start at boot: sudo systemctl enable mediamtx.
  3. Start it now: sudo systemctl start mediamtx.
  4. If your distribution uses systemd-networkd-wait-online.service, enable it as appropriate for that network stack: sudo systemctl enable systemd-networkd-wait-online.service. Do not run this command unless that service is installed and is the correct wait-online implementation for your host.

These commands follow the MediaMTX systemd instructions. Enabling a service configures boot startup; starting it launches the current process. Neither action alone proves that a source is publishing correctly or that YouTube is receiving the stream.

Verify the stream and investigate failures

Check service state and logs

  • Check whether systemd considers the service active with systemctl status mediamtx.
  • Inspect the service’s journal output with journalctl -u mediamtx. The current MediaMTX configuration reference lists stdout as the default log destination; how systemd captures and retains output depends on the host’s setup. MediaMTX configuration reference
  • Confirm that the logs indicate MediaMTX loaded the configuration file you edited, rather than a different copy.
  • After a reboot, check again that the service is enabled and active, and confirm that YouTube receives both audio and video from the expected source path.

Common problems and fixes

Symptom Likely cause What to check
Service fails to start The executable or configuration path in ExecStart does not match the installed files, or the configuration cannot be loaded. Check file locations, permissions, and the service journal; make sure the YAML edit is valid and the unit points to the intended configuration.
Service starts before networking is usable The network-online target was requested, but the host’s wait-online service is missing, disabled, or not the one used by its network stack. Identify the network manager and its corresponding wait-online service. Enable the appropriate implementation and verify it on reboot.
MediaMTX runs but YouTube does not receive the stream The source may not be publishing to the configured path, or the destination URL/key may be wrong or stale. Check the source path, then copy the current RTMPS URL and key from YouTube Live Control Room and check service output.
YouTube rejects the forwarded stream The stream may be video-only, or the destination may not use the current secure ingest endpoint. Ensure the outgoing stream has both audio and video, and use the current RTMPS URL with rtmps as the protocol.
Forwarding stops after a MediaMTX process crash The baseline unit does not define a process restart policy. Choose and test a suitable systemd restart policy for your environment; the documented sample does not supply one.

The configuration reference identifies itself as the latest release configuration and marks its version as v1.21.1; that marker can change. Consult the reference for the version actually installed. Although MediaMTX also lists a Control API and Prometheus-compatible metrics, enabling and securing those features is outside this minimal setup.

What “24/7” depends on

A systemd unit can arrange for MediaMTX to start at boot and order its launch relative to network initialization. The example does not establish automatic recovery from process crashes, network outages, or YouTube disconnects, and it does not provide an uptime guarantee. Continuous operation also depends on a working source, host and network availability, correct ingest credentials, and YouTube’s requirements. The official pages cited here do not establish account eligibility, duration limits, or all policy conditions for a continuous YouTube stream; check YouTube’s current rules for your account before planning a long-running broadcast.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is a continuous YouTube stream from uploaded videos rather than forwarding a live source through your own Linux host, StreamNeo is the cloud alternative: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The cloud keeps the loop running without a computer or home connection staying on. It streams the uploaded file as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; it can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card.
