NGINX RTMP, HLS, or RTMPS for a 24/7 YouTube Channel?

RTMPS is the practical default for most 24/7 YouTube streams; use HLS for a specific codec or HDR need. NGINX RTMP is a relay component, not the ingest choice.

For most 24/7 YouTube channels, use RTMPS if your encoder supports your intended format: YouTube recommends it for general live ingestion, and it is a continuous stream with lower latency than segment-based HLS. Choose HLS when you specifically need a supported codec or HDR workflow that RTMPS cannot provide, and can meet YouTube’s more demanding segmented HTTPS requirements. NGINX RTMP is a relay/server component; using it does not decide which protocol your final connection to YouTube uses.

RTMP, RTMPS, HLS, and NGINX are different things

RTMP and HLS describe ways of sending media. RTMPS is RTMP protected by transport encryption. NGINX RTMP is a server module that can receive, relay, or work with streaming media; it is not a synonym for YouTube’s RTMP ingest.

  • RTMP/RTMPS ingest: a continuous stream sent to YouTube. YouTube recommends RTMPS, calling it a secure extension of RTMP. YouTube’s encoder settings guidance describes its supported settings and testing workflow.
  • HLS ingest: media sent to YouTube as HTTPS-uploaded segments and a playlist. YouTube says HLS has higher latency because it sends video in segments rather than continuously. YouTube’s HLS setup guide sets out the packaging and request requirements.
  • NGINX RTMP: a server-side component that may sit between a source and YouTube. The nginx-rtmp-module project documents RTMP push/pull relay and related streaming features. A relay’s presence does not guarantee that its output meets YouTube’s ingest requirements.

Do not confuse NGINX’s built-in ngx_http_hls_module with the third-party RTMP module: the built-in module serves HLS from MP4/MOV files; it is not the same RTMP streaming component. See the NGINX HTTP HLS module documentation and F5 NGINX technical specifications.

Which protocol should a 24/7 channel use?

Consideration RTMP/RTMPS ingest HLS ingest
Latency Generally lower than segment-based HLS; YouTube recommends RTMPS especially when low latency matters. Higher: video is delivered in segments. YouTube disables its Ultra low-latency option for HLS.
Format needs Use when your encoder supports the codecs and workflow you need over RTMP/RTMPS. Can suit specific format requirements. YouTube’s guidance identifies HEVC support and discusses HLS for cases where RTMP encoder capabilities are insufficient, including HDR workflows. Check current constraints in YouTube’s documentation before configuring.
Transport and packaging Continuous RTMP-family stream; RTMPS encrypts the transport to YouTube. HTTPS upload with TS segments, a rolling playlist, and specific segment and request behavior.
24/7 reliability The protocol alone does not establish uptime. Recovery depends on your encoder, host, network, monitoring, restart, and failover design. Same uptime caveat, plus segment and playlist handling to validate. HLS is not inherently more reliable.

Choose RTMPS for the ordinary case

If the channel is a long-running stream and you do not need an HLS-specific format capability, start with RTMPS. YouTube’s encoder guide recommends it for YouTube Live. Confirm the selected encoder and codec are supported, then test the stream and watch YouTube’s stream health indicators.

Choose HLS for a specific capability

Use HLS when its supported codec or HDR workflow is necessary and its additional latency is acceptable. Google describes HLS ingestion as suitable for premium content needing high quality and high resolution at relatively higher latency in its HLS ingestion guide. This is a use-case distinction, not a promise that HLS improves 24/7 reliability.

What YouTube HLS ingest requires

HLS ingest is not simply “turn on HLS” or serve a normal HLS playback URL. The encoder must send media to YouTube in the required upload format. YouTube’s current setup instructions specify:

  1. Source or encoder to NGINX: identify whether the source sends RTMP, another supported input, or files, and which process handles encoding or packaging.
  2. NGINX or associated encoder to YouTube: specify RTMPS or HLS as the actual YouTube ingest. Verify the destination endpoint, stream key handling, codec, audio/video muxing, and reconnect behavior on this leg.
  3. Validate the implementation: an NGINX-generated HLS playback output is not automatically a compliant YouTube HLS upload. For HLS ingest, confirm the encoder or associated component implements YouTube’s HTTPS segment and playlist behavior.

The F5 NGINX RTMP module documentation covers NGINX Plus module support and configuration. Packaging and module availability vary by NGINX distribution and setup, so verify the documentation for the specific edition and deployment you operate.

Preflight and 24/7 operations

Before going live

  • Use a representative test with the intended audio, motion, codec, resolution, and bitrate. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring stream health in its encoder guidance.
  • For RTMPS, confirm the encoder is sending to the intended YouTube endpoint with the correct stream key and supported settings.
  • For HLS, check segment duration, TS packaging, rolling playlist length, HTTPS requests, and the endpoint against YouTube’s current requirements.
  • If relaying through NGINX, test each network leg independently and confirm what component reconnects after a disconnect.

Test unattended recovery separately

Neither protocol by itself guarantees that a channel stays live around the clock. Test the real host, network, encoder process, and restart configuration: interrupt the network, restart the encoder or relay, and verify that the source resumes and YouTube receives the expected stream. Decide how alerts, backups, and failover will work before relying on an unattended setup. The official protocol guidance establishes a latency and format tradeoff, not comparative 24/7 uptime results.

Common problems and what to check

  • HLS stream is rejected: check that the encoder is uploading TS segments using HTTPS POST/PUT and a rolling playlist with no more than 5 outstanding segments; confirm segments are 1–4 seconds and do not use byte ranges or unsupported encryption.
  • HLS latency is higher than expected: that is inherent to segment-based delivery relative to a continuous RTMP stream; YouTube also disables Ultra low latency for HLS. If low latency is a priority and the format permits it, consider RTMPS.
  • NGINX serves HLS, but YouTube does not accept it: serving HLS for playback is not equivalent to uploading compliant HLS ingest segments. Check the outgoing YouTube leg and the component responsible for packaging and HTTPS upload.
  • Stream key or endpoint fails: verify the current YouTube Live Control Room destination and key, and check that the encoder or relay is using the intended protocol. Avoid assuming an incoming NGINX RTMP connection configures the outgoing YouTube leg.
  • Stream stops after a host or network interruption: investigate process restart, source continuity, reconnection, network stability, and alerting. Changing from RTMPS to HLS does not by itself provide recovery.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the goal is to keep uploaded videos looping on YouTube without maintaining your own relay and encoder host, StreamNeo is a cloud service for YouTube-only 24/7 streams. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud.
