The National Film Board of Canada (NFB) launched ON FILME on YouTube on May 7, 2026. Announced on April 20, the initiative is a documentary-creation experiment focused on contemporary social and political issues—not a new subscription service or a replacement for NFB.ca.
ON FILME is designed for YouTube first, with the NFB saying its works would later come to NFB.ca and NFB apps. Its defining feature is a four-format package that approaches one issue through different kinds of documentary storytelling.

What ON FILME is—and is not
The NFB describes ON FILME as a YouTube-based documentary initiative intended to test forms suited to digital audiences and encourage discussion of timely sociopolitical questions. It is best understood as a creative collection or first edition, rather than a conventional episodic television series.

There is no indication in the NFB’s published material that ON FILME is a separately paid platform, a new subscription tier, or an independent streaming service. YouTube is the primary launch environment; the NFB’s own services remain part of the distribution plan.

The project gives creators room to approach a subject from their own perspectives while using formats that fit different viewing habits—from a short introduction on a phone to a longer discussion or documentary.
Launch date and participants
The NFB announced ON FILME on April 20, 2026, and launched it online on May 7. The first edition involves directors Mounir Kaddouri (also known as Maire de Laval), Anne-Lovely Etienne and Simon Coutu. Pierre-Mathieu Fortin is credited as producer and Nathalie Cloutier as executive producer. Laurence Dolbec of the NFB’s Innovation Lab also took part in an industry discussion about the project.
The NFB frames the initiative as an experiment in documentary form, audience development and public conversation. Claims about its reach or success should remain modest: the published announcements do not provide audience targets, view counts, budget details, monetization information or performance results.

How the four-format structure works
Each issue is developed through four complementary treatments. The NFB’s collection gives approximate targets; they are a design framework, not a promise that every future edition will use exactly the same durations.

The architecture is deliberately cumulative. The short piece can attract a casual viewer; the medium-length film supplies context; the discussion tests interpretations and extends the conversation; and the testimony grounds an abstract issue in lived experience. The four videos are therefore not necessarily four unrelated films or four separate subjects.
The first project: Après moi le déluge
The first work listed in the official ON FILME collection is Après moi le déluge. Its four components have these exact runtimes:

Together, the pieces demonstrate the initiative’s central idea: one contemporary issue can be entered through a brief orientation, examined through a longer documentary, debated in a conversational format and understood through a personal account.

Why make it for YouTube?
According to the NFB’s launch announcement, ON FILME is meant to meet audiences on platforms they already use while adapting documentary language to digital viewing. YouTube offers search, recommendations, sharing and familiar mobile playback. Those features can help a public institution reach new digital audiences that may not begin with a visit to a film-board catalogue.
That choice also involves trade-offs. YouTube can improve discovery but gives the platform significant influence over recommendation and viewing context. A short entry point can widen access, while the longer formats remain necessary for complexity. Creator-led approaches may feel more distinctive than a standardized television package, but they can also make the initiative harder to describe as a conventional series. And subjects involving politics or social conflict require careful context, attribution and moderation.

ON FILME alongside the NFB’s wider YouTube strategy
ON FILME was not presented as the NFB’s only YouTube-native experiment. A May 2026 NFB release also highlighted In the Closet, a separate six-part documentary series by Ajahnis Charley. That project was scheduled for two episodes a week globally on YouTube beginning May 25, 2026, at 8 p.m. EDT on Mondays.
The comparison matters: the NFB was using YouTube as a primary release setting for specially designed work, not merely as an archive for older films. The two projects should not be conflated, however. In the Closet is a separate series, while ON FILME is a multi-format documentary initiative.

Start with the NFB’s official YouTube presence and the ON FILME collection page. The NFB said the works would later be made available on NFB.ca and its apps, but the inspected announcements do not give a definitive date for that migration. YouTube availability can also vary by title or territory, so check the individual listing for access, captions and language options.

The NFB’s broader catalogue includes more than 7,000 films across its online platform, apps and YouTube presence. That figure describes the NFB’s overall collection, not the number of ON FILME titles.
What remains unknown
The launch materials do not establish ON FILME’s budget, YouTube monetization model, audience metrics, long-term release schedule, territorial-rights policy, success criteria or whether another edition will follow. Nor do they say that the four-format structure is a permanent requirement for every future project. Those are open questions rather than evidence that the initiative has failed or succeeded.
For now, ON FILME’s significance is clearer as a format experiment than as a new media service: the NFB is putting original, issue-driven documentary work where viewers already watch, then giving each subject several ways to be encountered and discussed.
